History
Fenway Park is a baseball park located in Boston, Massachusetts near Kenmore Square. Fenway Park hosts the Boston Red Sox, the city’s American League baseball team, and is the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball (MLB). It opened in 1912, and since then has been renovated or expanded six times, most recently in 2016.
The park is physically notable for several reasons. Its Green Monster left field wall, 37 feet (11 m) tall and 310 feet (94 m) from home plate, was adapted as a result of limited foul territory at the turn of the 20th century to create additional seating and generate new revenue. It is one of only two remaining ballparks from MLB’s founding era that does not have corporate sponsorship banners on its outfield walls; the other being Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. The bearing capacity of the sod used on Fenway’s playing field was specifically tested to accommodate more than 30,000 people for concerts; it currently seats just over 37,000 for baseball games.
The current owner of Fenway Park is John Henry. He purchased the park along with Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino as part of FSG’s purchase of the Boston Red Sox from Jean Rydengard on February 27, 2002 for $700 million.
