It’s the top of the ninth inning, and the home team is down by three runs. They have one out and the bases are loaded. The tying run is at third base, and the winning run is at first base. The batter steps up to the plate. The pitcher winds up and throws a fastball…

…And the batter hits a home run! The home team wins the game, 4-3!

The score of the baseball game is 0-0, with both teams still having a chance to score.

runs

In baseball, the score is a record of the progress of a game. The score is made up of runs, hits and errors. A run is scored when a player on the offensive team crosses home plate after hitting the ball, getting on base via a walk or hit by pitch or reaching base due to an error by the defensive team. A player scores a hit when he safely reaches base after hitting the ball with his bat. An error is charged to a defensive player who makes a mistake that allows an offensive player to safely reach base or advance further around the bases.

hits

A hit in baseball is when a batter safely reaches first base after hitting the ball into fair territory. Though there are different types of hits, such as a home run or bases-clearing double, they all count the same towards a player’s batting average. A single hit, sometimes called a “base knock,” is the most common type of hit.

errors

Errors are scored when a fielder makes a mistake that allows a batter or baserunner to advance, or when a fielder fails to make an expected play. Errors are also charged against a pitcher when he or she throws wild pitches or hits batters with pitches.

left on base

In baseball, “left on base” (LOB) is the number of batters a pitcher has allowed to reach base safely (i.e., not including batters who were put out) while they were still in the game pitched. It is distinguishable from “innings pitched” in that it only credit’s the pitcher for batters they have put on base while they were pitching, and not for any inherited runners.

score

The score of a baseball game is the number of runs scored by each team during the course of the game. The final score is usually expressed in terms of runs (the winning team’s score) and hits (the number of base hits by both teams). For example, a final score might look like this: Chicago Cubs 9, Milwaukee Brewers 2. In this example, the Cubs have scored nine runs and the Brewers have scored two.
