What is WWE WrestleMania?

WWE WrestleMania is a professional wrestling event produced annually by WWE, a Connecticut–based professional wrestling promotion. The event is the company’s biggest and most influential pay-per-view (PPV) of the year. WrestleMania was conceptualized by WWE owner Vince McMahon and long time WWE ring announcer and Hall of Famer Howard Finkel. The first WrestleMania took place in 1985 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Recognized as the Super Bowl of sports entertainment, WrestleMania enhances WWE’s annual business and serves as the culmination of storylines that have developed over several months. An integral part of the WrestleMania experience is “WrestleMania Week”, which begins a few days before the event and culminates on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

The History of WWE WrestleMania

WrestleMania is a professional wrestling event produced annually by WWE, a Connecticut-based promotion company. The name is a combination of the words “wrestle” and “mania”. WrestleMania was conceptualized by WWE owner Vince McMahon and long time WWE ring announcer Howard Finkel. The event was first held in 1985 and has since been held 31 times, with the 32nd iteration scheduled for April 3, 2016.

WrestleMania’s widespread success helped transform professional wrestling. Previously, wrestling events were mostly confined to small arenas and televised on local television stations. Following the lead of other sporting events such as baseball’s World Series and basketball’s NBA Finals, McMahon began to promote WrestleMania as a premier sporting event worthy of national media attention and top-tier sponsorship. In order to make the event more accessible to families, he sought permission from local authorities to move it to larger stadiums. In 1987, WrestleMania III set a then-record attendance of 93,173 people for the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan; that record stood until 1999’s WrestleMania XV, which drew41943 spectators to the astrodome in Houston for Mankind vs The Rock.

While the first four WrestleManias were held in stadium venues, the fifth edition returned to Madison Square Garden. For the next few years WWE alternated between cities before expanding nationwide with WrestleManias VII and VIII (both 1992) taking place simultaneously at different venues – Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena and Hoosier Dome respectively; this was one day after Ric Flair won his first WWE Championship at The Royal Rumble. The ninth edition (1993) saw the pioneered concept of branded merchandise for sale during WrestleMania with both WM9 emblazoned sweat-shirts and caps available during the event itself.

As popularity increased McMahon made plans for future shows in larger venues across America; however plans were put on hold following disappointing attendances at both SummerSlam 1991 (held at Madison Square Garden) as well as Survivor Series that same year (at Joe Louis Arena). To compound things further WWF also lost their sole major sponsor around this time – Slim Jim – which forced them to look elsewhere for financial backing; this eventually came in 1992 from LapCorp – owned by Linda McMahon – which would remain their main sponsor until 1996/1997 when they would be replaced by good old Vince himself with his new company TitanSportsInc (the rebranding took place soon after Survivor Series 1996).
