The Finals Format
The NBA Finals is the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western conference champions play a best-of-seven game series to determine the league champion. The winning team of the series receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
The Finals were initially created as a three-game series; however, it was expanded to a five-game format in 1949 and finally a seven-game format in 1987.
Since 1987, home court advantage in the NBA Finals has been determined by record, rather than by playoff seeding position. The team with the better regular season record receives home court advantage, regardless of whether the team finished higher or lower in playoff position.
From 2003 until 2010, the NBA Finals were broadcast on ABC. In 2011, ESPN acquired the rights to broadcast the NBA Finals.
