With 21 playoff appearances and nine division championships since 1968 (through 2020), they have amassed a .570 winning percentage during that span (second only to the Los Angeles Lakers). However, they have not advanced past the conference finals since 1957 and have not played in the NBA Finals since 1960.

However, they failed to make the NBA Finals during that timespan. In 2002, the franchise relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana (now New Orleans Pelicans), and became known as the New Orleans Hornets until 2013 when they returned to Charlotte after spending a decade away from North Carolina while playing home games in Oklahoma City (now Thunder) during that timespan as well due to hurricanes Katrina & Rita decimating New Orleans at that time.

The Spurs have made the playoffs in every season since 1997–98, tying for first-longest such streak with 21 consecutive seasons ending with 2020–21. They would make it 22 seasons if they qualify for the playoffs this year—tying them with the Philadelphia 76ers for second-longest streak behind only Syracuse Nationals/Philadelphia 76ers (1949–63; active).
