The Miami Heat
History
The Miami Heat are a professional basketball team based in Miami, Florida. The Heat compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA). They play their home games at American Airlines Arena, and are one of the Eastern Conference’s eight seed teams.
The franchise began play in the 1988–89 NBA season as an expansion team. They played their first game on November 5, 1988, against the Los Angeles Clippers. This was also Pat Riley’s first game as head coach of an NBA team. They finished their inaugural season with a record of 15 wins and 67 losses. In their second season, they improved to a record of 38 wins and 44 losses, but still missed the playoffs. Led by Steve Smith and Riley, who was now coach of the year, the Heat made the playoffs for the first time in 1991 with a 41–41 record.
Riley became president of basketball operations prior to the 1995–96 season; he then rebuilt the team around All-Star center Alonzo Mourning. Wade led the Heat to their first ever NBA championship in 2006. Mourning and Riley retired from active play shortly thereafter, while Shaquille O’Neal was traded to free up salary cap space for other players such as Jason Terry and Gary Payton; O’Neal would eventually be reacquired in 2004.

As of 2019, the franchise has yet to win an NBA championship, but has nonetheless been quite successful, making the NBA Finals in 1995 and 2009.
In the 2009 NBA Finals, the Orlando Magic were led by superstar center Dwight Howard and head coach Stan Van Gundy. The Magic eventually lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games, but their run to the Finals was one of the most unlikely in NBA history. After losing Shaquille O’Neal to free agency in 1996 and then trading away Penny Hardaway in 1999, the Magic struggled mightily for much of the next decade. However, they slowly built themselves back up under GM Otis Smith and head coach Stan Van Gundy, culminating in their unlikely run to the 2009 NBA Finals.
Championships
Although the Orlando Magic have yet to win an NBA title, they have been one of the league’s most successful teams since their inception in 1989. The Magic have made the NBA Finals twice, in 1995 and 2009, and have won five conference titles. They are also one of only two teams in NBA history to record back-to-back 60-win seasons before winning a championship, doing so in 1995 and 1996.

The franchise began play in the 1998 Major League Baseball season as the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and adopted its current name, the Tampa Bay Rays, before the 2008 season. The Devil Rays began construction of what was originally named the Florida Suncoast Dome in 1996, and played their first game within it when it opened spring training of 1998. Following the 2000 baseball season, Tropicana Products purchased the then-devil rays for $200 million from Vince Naimoli and other investors who had purchased it for $130 million only two-and-a-half years earlier with an eye toward moving the franchise to another city if St Petersburg refused to build them a new stadium. After being formed as an expansion team in 1993 and then subsequently joining MLB in 1998 after purchasing their first two seasons as an “MLB start-up”, they finally became regular playoff contenders throughout much of the 2000s decade while calling Tropicana Field home.
During this time period players including pitcher Scott Kazmir(now with the Los Angeles Angels), third baseman Evan Longoria(now with San Francisco Giants), and catcher/outfielder Wil Myers(now with San Diego Padres) each made their MLB debuts with Tampa Bay while EvanLongoria would go on to win 3 gold gloves and be selected to 3 all-star games during his time withthe rays(2009-2017)
Championships
The Tampa Bay Rays have never won an NBA Championship, but they did win the World Series in 2008.
