What NFL Coach Got Fired Today?

Keep up with the latest NFL coaching news with our blog. We’ll let you know who got fired today and why.

Introduction

In the National Football League, there is always speculation about which coach will be the next to get fired. It’s part of the business, and it’s often difficult to predict who will be let go and when.

Every year, a few coaches are fired after a poor season or disappointing performance. Sometimes, a coach is let go because of disagreements with management or ownership. Sometimes, a change is made simply to try to turn things around.

Here are a few coaches who have been rumored to be on the hot seat in recent weeks. Some of them may be let go at the end of the season, while others may keep their jobs for now. Only time will tell.

NFL Coaches Who Have Been Fired in 2020

So far, four NFL coaches have been fired in 2020. They are Bill O’Brien of the Houston Texans, Adam Gase of the New York Jets, Mike McCarthy of the Dallas Cowboys, and Vic Fangio of the Denver Broncos. All four coaches were fired after their teams started the season with losing records.

Bruce Arians

On January 8, 2020, Bruce Arians announced his retirement from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, effective immediately. He was replaced by defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Arians had a successful run as head coach of the Buccaneers, leading them to a Super Bowl win in his first season with the team. However, he was not able to replicate that success in subsequent seasons and the team failed to make the playoffs in 2019.

Arians’ departure from Tampa Bay leaves two NFL head coaching vacancies for the 2020 season.

Bill O’Brien

Houston Texans head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien has been fired, the team announced on Monday, Oct. 5.

O’Brien had a 52-48 record in six seasons with the Texans. He led the team to four consecutive AFC South titles from 2016 to 2019 but lost in the Wild Card round each time. The Texans started this season 0-4 and were coming off a 31-23 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

“Houston Texans Head Coach and General Manager Bill O’Brien has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately,” the team said in a statement. “Assistant Head Coach Romeo Crennel will assume head coaching duties on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2020 season.”

O’Brien is the first NFL head coach to be fired this season.

Dan Quinn

Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn has been fired, the team announced Sunday morning.

The Falcons are off to an 0-5 start this season and have lost nine of their last 10 games dating back to last season. They blew a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl to the Patriots in 2016.

Quinn, who was in his fifth season with the Falcons, had a record of 43-42 with the team.
