We’re keeping track of all the NFL coaching changes for the 2020 season. Check back here for updates on who was fired and who was hired.

NFL Coach Firings

NFL teams have already started making coaching changes ahead of the 2020 season. The first coach to be fired was Panthers head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera was let go after nine seasons with the team. He led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015, but the team has struggled the past few years.

Why do NFL coaches get fired?

NFL coaches are among the most pressure-packed and highest-paid jobs in all of professional sports. And yet, they are also some of the most short-lived positions in terms of job security. On average, NFL head coaches last just over three years with their current team before being fired or moving on to another opportunity.

There are a number of reasons why NFL coaches get fired. One is simply that they are not winning enough games. Another is that they are not able to get along with their players or other members of the organization. Sometimes, a coach is fired because he has lost the support of the owner or general manager.

Whatever the reason, getting fired as an NFL coach is almost always a painful experience. But for some, it can also be an opportunity to start fresh and rebuild their careers.

How often do NFL coaches get fired?

including the 2019 NFL season, NFL teams have fired a total of 97 head coaches since the start of the 2000 season. That averages out to slightly more than four per year, although there have been as many as eight in a single year and as few as one.

Not counting interim head coaches, 42 head coaches were fired following the 2019 season. That was the most in a single season since 2007, when eight coaches were let go. It was also the most in a single season since the current eight-team playoff format was adopted in 1990.

At least one NFL head coach has been fired every year since 2000 except for 2011 and 2013.

Who are some of the most recent NFL coaches to be fired?

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. The NFL coach is the leader of the team and responsible for the team’s strategy and game play.

In any given year, a number of NFL coaches are fired. Some coaches are fired mid-season, while others are let go after the season ends. Here are some of the most recent NFL coaches to be fired:

-Jim Caldwell (Detroit Lions)
-Todd Bowles (New York Jets)
-Steve Wilks (Arizona Cardinals)
– Vance Joseph (Denver Broncos)

Reasons for NFL Coach Firings

NFL coaches are some of the most sought-after professionals in the world. They are also some of the most fired. In fact, an NFL coach’s job is one of the most volatile in all of sports. So, what causes an NFL coach to get fired?

Poor performance

In the National Football League (NFL), a head coach is the leader of the team’s coaching staff, responsible for working with assistant coaches in developing game strategies, making personnel decisions, and heading up practices and game-day operations. Head coaches Ron Rivera of the Carolina Panthers and Mike Zimmer of the Minnesota Vikings were fired on December 3, 2019, after both struggled to achieve winning records in recent seasons. In Rivera’s case, he led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015 but had not made the playoffs since then. Meanwhile, Zimmer guided the Vikings to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons but missed out on the postseason in 2019.

Other NFL head coaches who were fired during or after the 2019 season include Freddie Kitchens of the Cleveland Browns, Pat Shurmur of the New York Giants, Vance Joseph of the Denver Broncos, Jay Gruden of the Washington Redskins, and Bill O’Brien of the Houston Texans. All except for O’Brien had losing records in 2019. Kitchens was fired after just one season at the helm, while Shurmur was let go after two years despite posting a winning record in 2019 (9-7). Joseph was dismissed after back-to-back losing seasons, while Gruden was let go by Washington after five seasons that included just two playoff appearances. O’Brien was let go by Houston after four up-and-down seasons that included four trips to the playoffs but also three losing campaigns.

Losing season

The most common reason for an NFL coach’s firing is due to a losing season. A head coach is typically given a few years to turn a team around, but if the losses keep piling up, the front office will start to lose patience. In the last five years, 26 NFL coaches have been fired after a losing season.

Other reasons for an NFL coach’s firing can include poor player discipline, off-field scandal, personality clashes with management or players, and a simple difference in philosophy. Sometimes, a new general manager or owner will want to bring in their own coach to lead the team in a new direction. Whatever the reason, it’s never an easy decision to fire an NFL coach mid-season.

Player misconduct

Player misconduct has been a leading reason for NFL coach firings in recent years. In 2014, for example, the San Francisco 49ers fired head coach Jim Harbaugh after a string of players were suspended for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. In 2017, the Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Chuck Pagano after a player protesting during the national anthem drew criticism from fans and teammates alike.

Off-field issues

While a coach’s on-field performance is the most important factor in whether or not they keep their job, it’s not the only thing that can result in a firing. Numerous coaches have been let go due to off-field controversies, ranging from personal conduct to player discipline to front office disagreements.

Here are some of the most notable examples of NFL coaches being fired for reasons other than on-field performance:

-In 2014, the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Joe Philbin after a string of player misconduct controversies, including the bullying scandal involving offensive lineman Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito.
-In 2017, the New York Giantsfired head coach Ben McAdoo amid player discontent and a front office power struggle. McAdoo had also come under fire for his handling of star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was suspended for one game late in the season.
-In 2018, the Green Bay Packers fired head coach Mike McCarthy after a dispute with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers over playcalling. McCarthy had also come under criticism for his team’s lackluster performance in recent seasons.

NFL Coach Firings in 2020

So far this NFL season, there have been 4 coaches fired from their positions. These coaches are: Bill O’Brien of the Houston Texans, Hue Jackson of the Cincinnati Bengals, Adam Gase of the New York Jets, and Matt Patricia of the Detroit Lions. All of these firings come as a surprise to the NFL world, as each of these coaches had been with their teams for at least 2 years.

Bill O’Brien

Bill O’Brien was fired by the Houston Texans on October 5, 2020, after starting the season 0–4. O’Brien had been the head coach of the Texans since 2014, and led the team to a record of 52–48 during his six seasons with the franchise.

Adam Gase

Jets fire head coach Adam Gase after two seasons
The New York Jets have fired head coach Adam Gase after two seasons, the team announced on Monday.
“This morning, I informed Adam Gase that he will no longer be the Head Coach of the New York Jets,” team owner and CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement. “I want to thank him for his dedication to our organization and our fans.”
Gase finishes his tenure with the Jets with a record of 9-23.

Mike Zimmer

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer was fired on Wednesday after six seasons with the team.

Zimmer, 67, had a career record of 60-57-1 with the Vikings, but he failed to win a playoff game in four chances.

The Vikings made the playoffs in three of Zimmer’s first four seasons but went 8-7-1 and missed the postseason in 2019.

Zimmer’s firing came one day after the Vikings’ offensive coordinator, Kevin Stefanski, was hired as the Cleveland Browns’ head coach.
