O’Brien was relieved of his duties as the Houston Texans head coach and general manager on October 5, 2020, after an 0–4 start to the season.

Doug Marrone- Jacksonville Jaguars

Doug Marrone was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars on December 18, 2020, after three seasons with the team. Prior to his time with the Jaguars, Marrone was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills for two seasons.

Marrone had a record of 23-43 with the Jaguars. His best season came in 2017 when he led the team to a 10-6 record and a trip to the AFC Championship game.

Marrone’s firing comes as no surprise after the Jaguars finished last in the AFC South with a 1-15 record in 2020.

Anthony Lynn- Los Angeles Chargers

Anthony Lynn was born in Dallas, Texas, on February 21, 1968. He played running back in college at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) from 1987 to 1989. After going undrafted in the 1990 NFL Draft, Lynn signed with the Buffalo Bills as a free agent. He played for the Bills from 1990 to 1994 and was part of their Super Bowl XXV-winning team in 1991.

Lynn began his coaching career as a running backs coach at Texas Southern University in 1995. He then had coaching stints with the Denver Broncos (2000-02), Dallas Cowboys (2003-05), Cleveland Browns (2006-08), New York Jets (2009-14), and San Francisco 49ers (2015). Lynn was hired as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017.

In his four seasons as the Chargers’ head coach, Lynn had a record of 33-31 (.516). He led the team to two playoff appearances, including a trip to the AFC Divisional Round in 2018. However, the Chargers failed to make the playoffs in 2020 and Lynn was fired on January 5, 2021.

Matt Patricia- Detroit Lions

Patricia was let go by the Lions on November 28, 2020, after a Thanksgiving Day drubbing at the hands of the Houston Texans. The Lions had a record of 13-29-1 under Patricia.

NFL Coaches Who Were Fired in 2019

2019 was a tough year for NFL coaches. A number of big-name coaches were let go, including Hue Jackson, Jay Gruden, and Bill O’Brien. Some coaches, like Zac Taylor and Matt LaFleur, were fired before they even got a chance to really prove themselves. Here’s a look at all the coaches who were fired in 2019.

Hue Jackson- Cleveland Browns

Hue Jackson was let go by the Browns after going 3-36-1 during his time with the team. Jackson had Trouble adapting to the modern NFL, and his tenure with the Browns was marred by poor personnel decisions and infighting between him and then-general manager Sashi Brown.

Marvin Lewis- Cincinnati Bengals

Marvin Lewis was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals for 16 seasons. He was fired on December 31, 2018, after compiling a 131-122-3 record with the team. In his 16 seasons, he led the Bengals to the playoffs seven times but never won a playoff game. Lewis is the winningest coach in Bengals history.

Vance Joseph- Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph was fired on Monday after two seasons in charge.

Joseph, 44, went 11-21 with the Broncos and failed to make the playoffs. He was hired in 2017 to replace Gary Kubiak, who retired after leading the Broncos to a Super Bowl win in 2016.

The Broncos made a change at quarterback this season, switching from Trevor Siemian to Case Keenum, but Keenum struggled and the team finished 6-10. Joseph was also criticized for his handling of the team’s kicking situation, which was a mess all season.

Joseph’s firing comes as no surprise. He was on the hot seat all season and it was just a matter of time before he was let go. The Broncos will now begin their search for a new head coach.

Dirk Koetter- Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Dirk Koetter was let go by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after they finished the 2019 season with a 7-9 record. This was his third season as head coach of the Bucs, and he posted a 19-29 record during his tenure. The team had high hopes for this season, but they failed to live up to expectations and missed the playoffs for the 11th straight year.

NFL Coaches Who Were Fired in 2018

NFL head coaches are some of the most pressure-packed jobs in all of sports. They are tasked with leading a team of highly talented individuals and putting them in the best position to win. But, when a team does not win, the head coach is usually the first one to blame and can ultimately lose his job. That is what happened to these NFL coaches in 2018.

John Fox- Chicago Bears

John Fox was the head coach of the Chicago Bears for four seasons. He was fired after the team finished with a record of 5-11 in 2017. Fox coached the Bears to a record of 14-34 during his tenure.

Chuck Pagano- Indianapolis Colts

Pagano was let go by the Colts after six seasons in Indianapolis. He posted a record of 53-43 with the Colts, including a trip to the AFC Championship game in 2014. Pagano’s time with the Colts ended on a sour note, as the team finished just 4-12 in 2017.

Adam Gase- Miami Dolphins

Adam Gase was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins for three seasons, from 2016 to 2018. He was fired on December 31, 2018, after the Dolphins finished with a 7–9 record for the second consecutive year.

Hue Jackson- Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have fired head coach Hue Jackson, the team announced on Monday morning.

Jackson, who was in his third season with the Browns, had a record of 3-36-1 with the team. He was hired by the Browns in 2016 after going 8-8 in his one season as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

The Browns are currently 2-5-1 and are last in the AFC North. They have not made the playoffs since 2002 and have not had a winning season since 2007.

Jackson was fired after a 33-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. The Browns led 18-14 at halftime, but were outscored 19-0 in the second half.

The Browns will name an interim head coach later today.

NFL Coaches Who Were Fired in 2017

There were several NFL coaches who were fired in 2017. Some of the coaches who were fired include Chuck Pagano of the Indianapolis Colts, John Fox of the Chicago Bears, and Jim Caldwell of the Detroit Lions. These coaches were all fired for different reasons, but they all share one thing in common: they failed to meet the expectations of their respective teams.

Ben McAdoo- New York Giants

Ben McAdoo was the 17th head coach in New York Giants history. He was fired on December 4, 2017, hours after the Giants lost to the Oakland Raiders, becoming the first head coach to be fired during the season since Bill Belichick was let go by the Cleveland Browns in 1995. McAdoo’s firing came after a string of player injuries and poor performance, including a 2-10 record in his second season as head coach.

John Fox- Chicago Bears

John Fox was the head coach of the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL) for three seasons. He was fired on January 1, 2018, after compiling a 14–34 record.

Marvin Lewis- Cincinnati Bengals

On Monday, Marvin Lewis became the latest NFL coach to be fired, following a disappointing 2017 season in which the Bengals failed to make the playoffs. Lewis had been with the team for 15 years, making him the longest-tenured coach in franchise history.

Lewis finishes his time in Cincinnati with a 133-122-3 record, but he will likely be best remembered for his 0-7 record in the playoffs. The Bengals never made it to a Super Bowl under Lewis, and they haven’t won a playoff game since 1990.

Chuck Pagano- Indianapolis Colts

On December 31, 2017, the Indianapolis Colts announced that they would not be renewing Head Coach Chuck Pagano’s contract, effectively firing him. This move came after a disappointing season for the Colts, who finished with a 4-12 record and failed to make the playoffs.

Pagano had been with the Colts since 2012, and during his time there he led the team to three playoff appearances and one Super Bowl appearance. However, the team struggled in recent years and failed to make the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. Pagano finishes his time with the Colts with a 53-43 record.
