Contents
It’s been a rough season for NFL coaches, with several getting the boot mid-season. Here’s a look at all the coaches who have been fired so far this season.
NFL Coaches Who Have Been Fired This Season
So far this NFL season, three head coaches have been fired. They are Hue Jackson of the Cleveland Browns, Dirk Koetter of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Vance Joseph of the Denver Broncos. All three coaches were let go after their teams failed to meet expectations.
Hue Jackson- Cleveland Browns
Hue Jackson was fired by the Cleveland Browns on October 29, 2018, after posting a record of 3–36–1 in two and a half seasons with the team. Jackson had been the Browns’ head coach since 2016 and led the team to a 1–15 record in his first season and an 0–16 record in his second season.
Dirk Koetter- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Dirk Koetter was fired on December 30, 2018, after three seasons as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He compiled a record of 19-29 as the Buccaneers head coach.
Vance Joseph- Denver Broncos
Vance Joseph was fired by the Denver Broncos on Monday, December 31, 2018, after two seasons with the team. Joseph had a record of 11-21 in his two seasons as head coach of the Broncos.
Reasons For The Firing
So far this NFL season, five head coaches have been fired. They are Bill O’Brien of the Houston Texans, Adam Gase of the New York Jets, Matt Patricia of the Detroit Lions, Vic Fangio of the Denver Broncos, and Pat Shurmur of the New York Giants. All of these firings have come as a surprise to many. So, what are the reasons behind these decisions?
Jackson- 3-36-1 record over two and a half seasons
The Browns have gone through six coaches in the past decade, including three in-season firings. Jackson’s .088 winning percentage is the worst for any Browns coach with at least 10 games.
The Browns have lost 30 of their past 32 games, dating back to 2016. They are 1-31 in the past two seasons under Jackson, who was hired by owner Jimmy Haslam in 2016.
In 2016, Jackson led the Browns to a 1-15 record, which tied the 2008 Detroit Lions for the worst record in NFL history. The Browns went 0-16 last season and are 2-5-1 this season.
Koetter- 28-42 record over four and a half seasons
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired head coach Dirk Koetter on Sunday, one day after the team finished its 2018 season with a lackluster 34-32 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
Koetter, who was in his fourth season with the Buccaneers, had a 28-42 record during his time with the team.
The Buccaneers had high hopes for this season, but they failed to live up to expectations, finishing 5-11 and missing the playoffs for the 11th straight year.
Koetter is the third NFL head coach to be fired this season, joining Hue Jackson of the Cleveland Browns and Todd Bowles of the New York Jets.
Joseph- 11-21 record over two seasons
Joseph was hired by the Texans in 2016 after impressing as the offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins, and led Houston to a 9-7 record and a playoff appearance in his first season. But the team took a step back in 2017, finishing 4-12, and quarterback Deshaun Watson’s season-ending ACL injury in practice was a big reason why.
The 46-year-old Joseph is known as a players’ coach, and he was popular in the locker room. But with the Texans expected to be major contenders in the AFC South again next season with Watson healthy, they decided to make a change.
How The Teams Have fared Since The Change
NFL teams are not afraid to make a change when they feel it is necessary, even if it is mid-season. This season, we have seen a number of NFL teams make a change at the head coaching position. Some teams have made a change because they are not happy with the direction the team is heading, while others have made a change due to poor performance. Let’s take a look at how the teams have fared since making the change.
Browns- 1-1 under new head coach Gregg Williams
Since making the change from Hue Jackson to Gregg Williams, the Browns have gone 1-1. In their first game against the Denver Broncos, the Browns were able to pull out a win with a final score of 17-16. Their second game was against the San Diego Chargers, which they lost 20-13.
Buccaneers- 3-0 under new head coach Bruce Arians
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a roller coaster of a season. After firing long-time head coach Dirk Koetter, the team went out and hired former Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. The team has gone 3-0 under the new regime, with wins coming against the Rams, Panthers, and Giants. While it is still very early, the Buccaneers seem to be headed in the right direction under Arians.
Broncos- 0-2 under new head coach Vic Fangio
Gary Kubiak retired after the 2016 season, and Vance Joseph was hired to replace him. After going 5-11 in his first season and missing the playoffs, Joseph was fired after just two seasons. Vic Fangio, who was the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, was hired to replace him. The Broncos are 0-2 under Fangio.
