The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). This included increasing regular season games from 12 to 14 by 1966 and then to 16 by 1978.The NFL thus became one of only two pro sports leagues—the other being Major League Baseball—to use an odd number (in this case 13) of game sites during each regular season since 1972.
In recent years, however, due largely to scheduling conflicts with Major League Baseball which now uses several of their former stadiums, as well as avoiding conflict with college football bowl games held during late-December and early-January, five games are now played on Monday nights during Weeks 15–17; these added games are known colloquially as “Monday Night Football”.
