Key match-ups
Philadelphia Eagles at New England Patriots
The 4-2 Eagles will travel to take on the 6-0 Patriots in a battle of NFC and AFC powers. The Patriots are coming off of a dominant win against the Buffalo Bills, while the Eagles are coming off of a tough loss to the Carolina Panthers. The Patriots offense, led by QB Tom Brady, is averaging 29.8 points per game, while the Eagles defense is only giving up 18.7 points per game. This should be a great match-up between two of the best teams in the league.
Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers
The 5-2 Ravens will travel to take on the 4-3 Steelers in a battle of AFC North rivals. The Ravens are coming off of a tough loss to the New Orleans Saints, while the Steelers are coming off of a dominant win against the Miami Dolphins. The Ravens offense is led by QB Joe Flacco, and is averaging 25 points per game. The Steelers defense is only giving up 17.1 points per game. This should be a great match-up between two of the best teams in the division.
The spread
In the National Football League, the “spread” is the point spread–the difference between the final scores of the two teams playing. The point spread is used to even out the odds for bettors–in other words, to make sure that no one team is a heavy favorite to win.
For example, let’s say that the New England Patriots are playing the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots are a strong team and are expected to win by a wide margin. In this case, the point spread might be something like “Patriots -10.” This means that bettors who want to bet on the Patriots would have to risk ten points in order to win one point. Similarly, bettors who want to bet on the Dolphins would get ten points for every one point they risk.
The point spread is not always this simple, however. In some cases, there may be multiple point spreads available for a single game. For example, there might be a “moneyline” spread and a “total points” spread. In other cases, there may be different spreads for different types of bets. For example, there might be a separate spread for bets on whether or not a team will score a touchdown in the first half of the game.
The important thing for bettors to remember is that the point spread is only one factor to consider when making their bets. They should also look at things like weather conditions, injuries, and recent form when choosing which team to bet on.
