What NFL Teams Have Not Won a Superbowl?

It’s hard to believe but there are still a few NFL teams who have not won a Superbowl. Find out which teams these are.

Introduction

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, the highest professional level of American football in the world, the wealthiest professional sport league by revenue, and the sport league with the most valuable teams.

The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL). The game is the culmination to a regular season that begins in the late summer of the previous calendar year. Normally, Roman numerals are used to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held. For example, Super Bowl XLVII was played on February 3, 2013. The sole exception to this rule is Super Bowl 50, which was played on February 7, 2016, following Stanford University’s lead in using nomenclature that does not include local sponsor or host committee reference in its title.

As of 2019, there are 11 NFL teams who have never won a Superbowl:
-Atlanta Falcons
-Buffalo Bills
-Cincinnati Bengals
-Carolina Panthers
-Minnesota Vikings
-Detroit Lions
-Houston Texans
-Jacksonville Jaguars
-Los Angeles Chargers
-Los Angeles Rams
-Tennessee Titans

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are a professional American football team based in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The Chargers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. They were founded on August 14, 1959, and began play on September 10, 1960, as charter members of the American Football League (AFL). The Chargers joined the NFL as result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. Between 1995 and 2016, the Chargers played their home games at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego’s Mission Valley neighborhood. The return of the Chargers to Los Angeles was announced for the 2017 season, just one year after relocating back to Los Angeles from San Diego.

The Los Angeles Rams have been to 3 Super Bowls, all of which they lost. They lost Super Bowl XIV to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Super Bowl XXXVI to the New England Patriots, and Super Bowl LIII to the New England Patriots.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings joined the National Football League (NFL) as an expansion team in 1960, and first took the field for the 1961 season. The team competes in the National Football Conference (NFC) North division.

The Vikings have played in four Super Bowls: Super Bowl IV, VIII, IX, and XI, but lost each one. In addition, they have lost in their last six NFC Championship Games since 1970 (1973, 1974, 1976, 1987, 1998, 2000), and also missed the playoffs twelve times since then. As of 2019, the team has an all-time regular season record of 555 wins, 427 losses, and 12 ties; their all-time playoff record is 25 wins and 20 losses.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are a professional American football franchise based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are members of the East Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and have won three NFL championships, with their first coming in 1949. The Eagles have also appeared in five Super Bowls, losing to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVIII, and then to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX and Super Bowl LII.

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football team located in the San Francisco Bay Area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The team plays its home games at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, which it shares with the Santa Clara Stadium Authority. The 49ers were founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and joined the NFL in 1949 when the leagues merged. The team began play in Kezar Stadium in San Francisco before moving across town to Candlestick Park in 1970 and then to Levi’s Stadium in 2014.

The 49ers won five Super Bowl championships between 1981 and 1994, led by Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young, and coach Bill Walsh. They have been division champions 19 times between 1970 and 2020, making them one of the most successful teams in NFL history. However, they have not appeared in a Super Bowl since 1995 and have not won a playoff game since 2002. They are one of only two teams to appear in more than one Super Bowl without winning (the other being the Buffalo Bills).

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team. They have yet to win a Super Bowl, but they have made it to the big game 3 times. They lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL, to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, and most recently to the Patriots again in Super Bowl LI.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a professional American football team based in Tampa, Florida. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The Buccaneers first joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team, along with the Seattle Seahawks. Originally residents of the AFC West, the Seahawks were realigned to the NFC West in 2002. After spending their first twenty-six seasons in Tampa Stadium, which was shared with other local teams including baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays (then known as the Devil Rays), and college football’s South Florida Bulls, the Bucs moved to Raymond James Stadium beginning with their 2002 season.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans franchise began in 1960 as the Houston Oilers, a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The team relocated to Tennessee in 1997 and played at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis for one season before moving to Nashville. The Oilers won the first two AFL championships, and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team returned to Houston in 1971, where the franchise was renamed the “Houston Oilers”, playing its home games at the Astrodome for nearly 30 seasons.

The franchise became the “Tennessee Titans” in 1999, and played home games at Adelphia Coliseum from then until 2006. The team moved to LP Field (now Nissan Stadium) in Nashville in 2007. After spending more than two decades in Houston, extending into three different stadiums, the Oilers/Titans franchise’s time in Tennessee has been much shorter; thus far they have only used one home stadium for their time here.

While there are a number of reasons why these teams have not been able to win a Superbowl, it is safe to say that each team has its own unique circumstances.
