NFC Playoffs
The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world. This conference and its counterpart, the American Football Conference (AFC), currently contain 16 teams each, for a total of 32. NFC teams are located in the National Football Conference Divisional Playoffs.
The NFC playoff system has been in place since 1967, when the league expanded to 16 teams with the addition of the Atlanta Falcons. In 1970, the league realigned into two conferences with 13 teams each and four divisions; this created additional wild card spots for each conference. The current system was adopted in 2002, when the league expanded to 32 teams and divided into four divisions within each conference.
In order to be eligible for the playoffs, a team must first qualify by winning their division or by receiving a Wild Card berth. The Wild Card teams are then seeded fifth and sixth based on their regular season record. The top two seeds receive a first-round bye while seeds three and four host seeds five and six in the Wild Card round. The winners of those games advance to play the top seed in each respective conference in the Divisional Round. The winners of those games then advance to compete against each other in the Conference Championships. Finally, the winner from each conference faces off in the ultimate showdown, the Super Bowl.
