What NFL Teams Are In The Playoffs?

The NFL playoffs are upon us! Here’s a look at what teams are in and what their chances are of making a run at the Super Bowl.

AFC teams

There are four AFC teams in the playoffs this year. They are the New England Patriots, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ravens compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The team plays its home games at M&T Bank Stadium and is headquartered in Owings Mills.

Founded in 1996, the Ravens are the youngest franchise in the NFL, having spent their first five seasons in Cleveland, Ohio as the Cleveland Browns before relocating to Baltimore in 2001. The Ravens have won two NFL Championships: Super Bowl XXXV (2001) and Super Bowl XLVII (2012), leading all teams with an overall record of 2–0 in championship games. They are also the only team to win both championships since the 1970 AFL–NFL merger. Aside from winning those two Super Bowls outright, they have played in and lost three others: Super Bowl XXXVIII (2003), Super Bowl XLII (2008), and Super Bowl XLIX (2015). The Ravens have never posted a winning season in their 21-year history; however, they did qualify for the playoffs six times, most recently during the 2018 season.

Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills are a professional American football team based in the Buffalo–Rochester metropolitan area. The Bills compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays their home games at New Era Field in Orchard Park, New York. The Bills are the only NFL team that plays its home games in the state of New York.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston region. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is 22 miles (35 km) southwest of downtown Boston.

The Patriots are also renowned for their impressive dynastic run of success in the early 2000s, which culminated in their victory in Super Bowl XXXVIII and XXXIX. This dynasty was led by head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady, who have combined to form one of the most successful quarterback-head coach tandems in NFL history.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers began play in 1933 as a replacement for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The ownership of the Pirates, Art Rooney and his family, decided that a football team would be more profitable than a baseball team and so the Rooney’s took over the Chicago Cardinals and moved them to Pittsburgh. The team was originally going to be called the “Pittsburgh Panthers” but Mr. Rooney decided that he wanted his team to have a name that would represent the steel industry in Pittsburgh, which was booming at the time. So, in honor of the steel industry, Mr. Rooney named his new football team the “Pittsburgh Steelers”.

The Steelers have been very successful throughout their history. They have won six Super Bowls, more than any other team in NFL history. They have also won eight AFC Championships and seventeen division championships. The Steelers have had many great players throughout their history including names like “Mean” Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Jack Ham, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, Mike Webster, Jack Lambert, Mel Blount, Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, Ben Roethlisberger, and Antonio Brown.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans are in the playoffs! They are the AFC South champions and will face the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wild Card game. The Titans finished the regular season with a 9-7 record and are led by quarterback Marcus Mariota.

NFC teams

The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world. The NFC consists of 16 teams, 13 located in the contiguous United States and three located in Canada.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are a professional American football team in the National Football League (NFL). The Cowboys compete in the NFL as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. They are headquartered in Arlington, Texas, and play their home games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington—which they share with the National Baseball League’s Texas Rangers.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers have qualified for the playoffs 27 times in their history, including nine times in a row from 2001–2009, making them the only NFC team to do so. They have won 13 NFL Championships (more than any other team in the NFL) and fourSuper Bowls, all since the 1966 AFL–NFL merger. The franchise has also crossed over one million in revenue.

Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are a professional American football team that compete in the National Football League (NFL). The Rams began play in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams in the short-lived second American Football League before joining the NFL the next year. In 1946, the franchise moved to Los Angeles. The Rams franchise remained in the metro area until 1994, when they moved to St. Louis. The Rams franchise returned to Los Angeles in 2016.

The Rams organization has won three NFL championships, and is the only one to win championships representing three cities (Cleveland in 1945, Los Angeles in 1951, and St. Louis in 1999). The Rams have been NFC champions six times (1945, 1951, 1955, 1967–1969) and have won five times (1954–1955, 2017–2018) while representing St. Louis. The other three times they reached the title game while based in LA were 1986 (lost 14-2 to New York Giants), 2018 (beat New Orleans 26-23 in OT), and 2019 (lost 13-3 to New England Patriots).

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are a professional American football team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings joined the National Football League (NFL) as an expansion team in 1960, and first took the field for the 1961 season. The team competes in the National Football Conference (NFC) North division.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The team was founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966. The Saints began play in Tulane Stadium in 1967.

The name “Saints” is an allusion to November 1 being All Saints Day in the Catholic faith, as it was founded on that date. They joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1967. The team’s primary colors are old gold and black; their logo consists of a fleur-de-lis superimposed on a five-pointed black star. They played their home games in Tulane Stadium through 1974, when they moved to the new Louisiana Superdome (now Mercedes-Benz Superdome).

For most of their first 20 years, the Saints were barely competitive, only getting to .500 twice. In 1987, they finished 12–3—their first-ever winning season—and qualified for the NFL playoffs for the first time in franchise history; this began a streak of 13 consecutive postseason appearances that lasted until 2000, which included ten playoff victories and nine trips to the NFC Championship Game or Super Bowl. In 2009, they defeating the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV 31–17 to win their first ever Super Bowl Championship.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football franchise based in Seattle, Washington. The Seahawks compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference West division. They joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team, along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Seahawks are owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and are currently coached by Pete Carroll. Since 2002, the Seahawks have played their home games at CenturyLink Field, located south of downtown Seattle. The Seahawks previously played home games in the Kingdome (1976–1999) and Husky Stadium (1994, 2000–2001).

Seattle has been amember of the NFL since 1976, when it joined as an expansion team along with Tampa Bay. The Seahawks have won ten division championships (1980, 1988, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2014) and three conference championships (2005, 2013, 2014). They have appeared in three Super Bowls: losing 21–10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL; defeating the Denver Broncos 43–8 for their first championship in Super Bowl XLVIII; and losing 28–24 to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.

Super Bowl

On Sunday, February 2, 2020, the San Francisco 49ers will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Miami, Florida for the 54th Super Bowl. This will be the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years, and the 49ers’ first appearance since 2013. Who will be crowned the 2020 NFL champions?

Date

The Super Bowl is an annual American football championship game. It is the culmination of a regular season that begins in the late summer of the previous calendar year.

Location

The location of the Super Bowl is chosen by the NFL well in advance, usually three to five years ahead of time. The league considers a number of factors in choosing the site, including stadium capacity, climate, fan and media interest, facilities, and transportation. The game is usually played on a Sunday in late January or early February and is rotated among CBS, Fox, and NBC so that each network gets to air the game about every three years.
