What NFL Team Has the Most Super Bowl Rings?

A look at which NFL team has the most Super Bowl rings, and what that says about the relative success of the franchise.

The Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most Super Bowls of any team in the National Football League (NFL) with six victories. The Steelers have also played in more Super Bowls than any other team, appearing eight times.

History

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional American football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Steelers compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Founded in 1933, the Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC. In contrast with their status as perennial also-rans in the pre-merger NFL, where they were mostly stuck in the middle of the standings, the Steelers of the post-merger era are one of the most successful NFL franchises.

Since the establishment of the playoff system in 1933, they have qualified for 27 playoffs, winning nine league championships, two pre-Super Bowl era titles, and four Super Bowls—making them one of six teams to have won more than four Lombardi Trophies. The Steelers share the record for second most Super Bowl appearances with eight. The Steelers lost their most recent championship appearance, Super Bowl XLV, on February 6, 2011.

The franchise has compiled an all-time regular season record of 640–450–22 (.587), making them one of only six teams that has never lost 600 games. They have experienced success throughout much of their history except for several stretches during which they did not qualify for a playoff berth—particularly between 1998 and 2002—and between 2010 and 2020. Since 1971 they have played all but two seasons at Heinz Field on Pittsburgh’s North Side just across from downtown—their home from 1957 until 1970 is now a UPMC Sports Performance Complex practice facility and office building adjacent to Heinz Field; it was torn down after acquiring its new name following PNC’s purchase of UPMC in 2012—and since first playing at Pitt Stadium way back in 1933; M&T Bank Stadium still hosts some regular season games about ten miles south right next to Camden Yards where Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles play just across Inner Harbor from historic downtown Baltimore as well as some playoff contests usually against New England Patriots or Buffalo Bills who like Pittsburgh originally played their home games nearby at Forbes Field while playing half their annual schedule on artificial turf up at old Municipal Stadium due to concerns about damage to Oriole Park caused by cleats although Municipal Stadium was actually located next door to Memorial Stadium where much more damage occurred due largely to players sliding into bases headfirst while wearing metal spikes which shredded both grass and turf while also tearing up wooden or concrete bleachers with metal benches often used by rowdy fans during fights even though baseball diamond configuration is laid out completely different from a football gridiron so collision risk at home plate or along first base line is minimal compared to crossing goal line or being tackled near sideline so any logic behind this policy eluded me anyway but I digress.

Super Bowl Wins

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most Super Bowls of any team in NFL history, with six total wins. They have also appeared in more Super Bowls than any other team, with eight total appearances. The New England Patriots have won five Super Bowls, and both the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers have won five as well.

The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.

Super Bowl Wins

The New England Patriots have the most Super Bowl wins of any team, with six. They also have the most appearances in the big game, with eleven. The Pats have been dominant in the NFL for much of the past two decades, winning three Super Bowls in four years between 2001 and 2004, and then adding two more titles in 2014 and 2016.

The Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most successful teams in NFL history. They have won five Super Bowls, more than any other team in the NFL. They have also played in eight Super Bowls, the most of any team in the NFL. The Cowboys have been to the playoffs 29 times, the most of any team in the NFL.

History

The Dallas Cowboys are a professional American football team based in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Cowboys compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. The franchise ranks as the world’s wealthiest sports franchise, worth approximately $4 billion, according to Forbes in 2019. The Cowboys also generate $620 million per year in revenue according to Business Insider. As of 2019, the Cowboys have played in 54 NFL seasons, compiling an overall record of 32 wins and 22 losses.

Super Bowl Wins

The Dallas Cowboys have 5 Super Bowl wins, which is the most in NFL history.

The San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have won 5 Super Bowls, the most of any team in the NFL. The 49ers have been to the Super Bowl a total of 7 times, also the most of any team in the NFL.

History

The San Francisco 49ers joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1946 as part of the AAFC. In 1950, the 49ers became part of the NFL when the AAFC merged with the NFL. The 49ers have won five Super Bowls (1981 (XVI), 1984 (XIX), 1988 (XXIII), 1989 (XXIV), 1994 (XXIX)), making them tied for second behind the Pittsburgh Steelers who have won six. The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots have each won five Super Bowls, but neither team has more than three Super Bowl wins in a row.

Super Bowl Wins

The San Francisco 49ers have won 5 Super Bowls in their history. They have appeared in a total of 8 Super Bowls, which is tied for the 5th most of any NFL team.

The Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers have the most Super Bowl rings of any NFL team, with thirteen. They also have the most appearances in the Super Bowl, with eight. The Packers have won the Super Bowl four times, including in 2010, when they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

History

The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. It is the third-oldest franchise in the NFL, dating back to 1919, and is the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team in the United States. Home games have been played at Lambeau Field since 1957.

The Packers are the last of the “small town teams” which were common in the NFL during the league’s early days of 1921 and 1922. Founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun, the franchise traces its lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. Between 1919 and 1920, the Packers competed against other semi-pro clubs from around Wisconsin and Michigan, before joining the American Professional Football Association (APFA), now known as the NFL, in 1921. Although Green Bay is by far the smallest major league professional sports market in North America, its fans have been loyal to the Packers longer than any other NFL franchise except for two: The Chicago Bears and New York Giants.

The Packers have won 13 league championships (9 NFL Championships and 4 Super Bowls), more than any other team in NFL history, with their most recent title coming in 2010 when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31–25 in Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium. They won 3 consecutive NFL championships from 1929 to 1931 and an additional 3 straight titles from 1936 to 1938. In total, they have appeared in 20 NFL Championship Games (13 pre–1970 AFL–NFL merger; 7 thereafter), winning 9 of them outright—the most among any NFL team.

They have played in a record five Super Bowls appearances and won two NFL Championships prior to the creation of the Super Bowl, bringing their total championship tally to 11 between 1929 and 1971, making them by far the most successful team in pre-Super Bowl era NFL history.
