The Cleveland Browns are an American professional football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Browns play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium, which opened in 1999, with administrative offices and training facilities in Berea, Ohio. The Browns’ official colors are brown, orange and white. They are unique among the 32 member franchises of the NFL in that they do not have a logo on their helmets and are the only team named after a specific person, original coach Paul Brown.
The franchise was founded in 1945 by businessman Arthur B. McBride and coach Paul Brown as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns dominated the AAFC, compiling a 47–4–3 record in the league’s four seasons and winning its championship in each of them. When the AAFC folded after the 1949 season, the Browns joined the National Football League along with three other AAFC teams and became part of the AFL–NFL merger.
In 1950, the Browns won their division championship for only one season as NFL champions that year. They returned to win division championships for three consecutive seasons from 1957 through 1959 behind Hall of Fame quarterback Otto Graham; however, they did not appear in any NFL championship games during that time period due to simultaneous existence of two separate professional football leagues within NFL’s 10-year history: when NFL merged with rival American Football League (AFL) in 1970 to form Super Bowl era National Football League, Eastern and Western conference playoff system was implemented which prevented any pre-merger league team from competing for NFL title until 1974 when an expansion Houston Oilers joined AFC—thus giving all pre-merger teams an equal opportunity to compete for conference title starting that year; then wild card playoff berth was added beginning 1975 season thus creating additional opportunity for teams outside of division winner circle to qualify for post-season playoffs; since then (excluding 1992Strike-shortened 8-game regular season), at least one non-division champion team has qualified for playoffs every year). Between 1965 and 1969, they made four trips to the NFL Championship game but failed to win each time by losing 27–0 to Green Bay Packers in 1965; 38–14 against Baltimore Colts two years later; 34–0 against eventual Super Bowl III champion New York Jets representing AFL; then 23–7 against eventual Super Bowl IV champion Kansas City Chiefs representing AFL—as three straight defeats were all shutouts featuring deficit margins of at least 20 points. It is notable that those three championship games pre-dated creation of AFC title game (which began play two years later), thus making Browns one of only two pre-merger teams never played/competed/qualified for a single conference title game during entire history as either NFL or AFL member while other is Detroit Lions who never played/competed/qualified for such game until winning NFC Championship Game following 1991 regular season—nearly 30 years later since joining NFC following result of 1970 AFL–NFL merger when Lions defeated Dallas Cowboys 3 weeks before Chiefs defeated Vikings 23–7 to win very first AFC Championship Game ever played which resulted into Chiefs’ eventual victory over Minnesota Vikings 23–7 during Super Bowl IV.
In 1964 Graham retired but Browns continued contended for playoffs led by new quarterback Frank Ryan who took them to three more league championship games within next five years including consecutive appearances during 1968 & 69 seasons—however they went 0–3 in those contests by being shutout twice (27–0 vs Colts following 1968 regular season & 23–7 vs Chiefs following 1969 regular season) while losing 34–0 vs eventual Super Bowl III champion New York Jets representing AFL during 1968 postseason—thereby finishing as runner up every time despite posting winning records in all but one year between 1963 & 1972 while also compiling best winning percentage (.658) among all 26 teams that played during 1960s decade which included 13 total playoff appearances & 8 division titles between 1960 & 1969 inclusive seasons.. They have the third fewest wins of any team
The San Francisco 49ers have had a rough year. They only have four wins and are currently tied with the New York Giants for the third fewest wins in the NFL. This is a far cry from the team that went to the Super Bowl just two years ago. So, what happened?
Injuries have played a big role in the 49ers’ struggles this year. Starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL in week three and hasn’t played since. Running back Jerick McKinnon, who was supposed to be a big part of the offense, also tore his ACL before the season even started. Without their two best offensive players, the 49ers have struggled to score points.
The defense has also been inconsistent at times and has given up some big plays. All of this has led to the 49ers having one of the worst records in the NFL this year.
