What NFL Team Never Won a Super Bowl?

Though there are a number of teams that have yet to win a Super Bowl, the Buffalo Bills are the only team to have never made it to the big game.

What NFL Team Never Won a Super Bowl?

The Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League as a member club of the American Football Conference North division. The Browns have not won a league championship since 1964, and they have not appeared in the Super Bowl since their most recent NFL title in 1964.

History

The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Browns play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium, which opened in 1999, with administrative offices and training facilities in Berea, Ohio. The Browns’ official colors are brown, orange, and white. They are unique among the 32 member franchises of the NFL in that they do not have a logo on their helmets.[1]

The franchise was founded in 1945 by businessman Arthur B. McBride and coach Paul Brown as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns dominated the AAFC, compiling a 47–4–3 record in its four seasons under Brown. When the AAFC folded after the 1949 season, the Browns joined the National Football League (NFL) along with three other AAFC teams: the San Francisco 49ers, the original Baltimore Colts franchise and the Brooklyn Dodgers (now defunct). In 1950, Brown hired legendary Otto Graham as head coach; Graham led them to three NFL championships in their first five seasons of existence.[2] However, between 1957 and 1965, they failed to reach another championship or appear in any conference title games during this period.

In 1965, Brown was fired by new owner Art Modell.[3] Lou Groza succeeded him as head coach; following Groza’s retirement during 1972 season,[4][5] Hank Bullough coached from 1972 to 1974. From 1975 to 1977, running back Mike Pruitt led them to an 11–5 record,[6][7] but it would be their only winning season during that span.[8] Between 1978 and 1995 (excluding strike- shortened1982 season), they reached playoffs six times but never won more than one game.[9][10][11][12] In 1995 under head coach Bill Belichick,, after two 2nd place finishes behind AFC Central rivals Pittsburgh Steelers,[13][14] they finally broke through with an AFC Central Championship win over Steelers on December 17,[15] advancing to AFC Championship Game for first time since 1969,[16][17]:284 defeating Indianapolis Colts 26–14,[18]:232 earning trip to Super Bowl XXXI where they lost to Green Bay Packers 35-21.[19]:257

Three years later owner Art Modell fired Belichick after fifth consecutive playoff loss,[20]:278 then hired Chris Palmer as new head coach;[21]- Palmer led them back to playoffs but lost Wild Card game at New England Patriots 24–14 on January 7 2001;[22]:463 this would be their last playoff appearance until 2020

Reasons they have never won a Super Bowl

The Browns have never appeared in a Super Bowl and they are the only NFL team that has never done so. They also have the longest drought of any team in any major professional sport, with their last championship coming in 1964. There are a number of reasons why the Browns have never won a Super Bowl, including:

-They have only made it to the playoffs 11 times in their history
-They have only won one playoff game since returning to the NFL in 1999
-They have had some truly dreadful teams over the years, including going 1-15 in 2016
-They have been plagued by bad luck, such as having two potential game-winning kicks blocked in the same game in 2002

The Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Lions have not won a Super Bowl in their history.

History

The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit. Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team began play in 1929 as an independent professional team. For the 1930 season, the Spartans formally joined the NFL as the other eleven teams that composed the league. Despite success within the NFL, they could not survive financial hardship and after three seasons were bought by George A. Richards, moving to Detroit for the 1934 season.

The Lions have won four NFL Championships, tied for 9th overall in total championships amongst all 32 NFL franchises; although they have not won since 1957. They are one of four current teams to have not yet played in a Super Bowl game along with the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. They currently have the longest active playoff drought in NFL history; they last made the playoffs during the 2016 season, which concluded with a loss in Wild Card Weekend to Seattle.

Reasons they have never won a Super Bowl

1. The Lions have only made it to the NFC Championship game four times in their history.
2. They lost in the NFC Championship game in 1992, 1993, 1995 and 2011.
3. The Lions have only had two winning seasons in the last ten years.
4. In 2008, the Lions became the first team to go 0-16 in a season.

The Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference South division. The team never won a Super Bowl.

History

The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium.

The Texans first played in 2002 as an expansion team after Houston’s previous NFL franchise, the Houston Oilers, became defunct. The following year, the Texans finished with a record of 4–12. While the team compiled a losing record in each of its first five seasons, they joined the then-new AFC South in 2002 and proceeded to win four division championships in that decade (2011, 2012, 2015, 2016). In 2010, they won their first playoff game in franchise history against the Cincinnati Bengals before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints 31–17 in the second round of the playoffs. The Texans have gone on to win more AFC South championships (in 2012, 2015 and 2016) since joining the conference.
