The Oakland Raiders

History

The Oakland Raiders are a professional American football franchise based in Oakland, California. The Raiders began play in 1960 as a member of the American Football League (AFL); they joined the National Football League (NFL) as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team’s off-field fortunes have varied considerably over the years. The team’s first three years of operation (1960–1962), the Raiders fared poorly, winning only two games and losing 13. In 1963, however, the Raiders’ fortunes improved dramatically with the addition of head coach Al Davis. In 1967, after several years of improvement, the Raiders reached the postseason for the first time. The team would go on to win its first AFL Championship that year; shortly thereafter, they defeated the Houston Oilers in Super Bowl II, becoming only the second AFL team to do so after achieving victory in Super Bowl I earlier that year. Since 1963, the team has won 15 division titles (10 AFC West Division titles and one AFL West Division title), four AFC Championships (1976, 1980, 1983, and 2002), one AFL Championship (1967), and three Super Bowls (XI, XV, and XVIII). At the end of the NFL’s 2018 season, the Raiders ranked tied for No. 4 in winning percentage (.563) among all NFL franchises since 1963; only four teams have posted a better regular-season record than them over that span (the San Francisco 49ers at .572 winning percentage during that time frame; followed by words Miami Dolphins (.560); Pittsburgh Steelers (.559); and Dallas Cowboys (.557)).
