The American Football Conference (AFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world. This conference and its counterpart, the National Football Conference (NFC), currently contain 16 teams each, making up a total of 32 teams in the NFL. Both conferences are made up of four divisions, each containing four teams. Two teams from each division make it to the playoffs each year, for a total of eight AFC teams in the playoffs every season.

In order to make it to the playoffs, a team first has to win their division. The four AFC divisional winners are then seeded one through four based on their regular season record, with the team with the best record being seeded first and so on. The two wild card teams are also seeded based on their regular season record, but they are not given a specific seed like the divisional winners are. Instead, they are just slotted into the fifth and sixth seed positions.

Once all six AFC playoff teams have been determined, they are placed into a single elimination tournament bracket where they will compete until only one team remains. The tournament starts with Wild Card Weekend, where the fifth and sixth seeds play each other in one game and the fourth seed plays the third seed in another game. The winners of those two games then advance to Divisional Playoff Weekend where they will play the top seed and second seed respectively. Lastly, the two surviving teams will meet in the AFC Championship game with a spot in Super Bowl LIII on the line.

The New England Patriots have won nine AFC Championships since 2001, more than any other team during that time period. They have also made it to three Super Bowls during that time period, winning all three of them.
