What NFL Teams Are Playing in the Super Bowl?

The National Football League (NFL) championship game, better known as the Super Bowl, is just around the corner. This year, the game will be played between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams.

Introduction

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, the highest professional level of American football in the world, the wealthiest professional sport league by revenue, and the sport league with the most valuable teams. The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the NFL.

The Teams

The two teams that are playing in the Super Bowl this year are the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots. These are two of the most successful teams in the NFL. The Rams have been to the Super Bowl three times and the Patriots have been to the Super Bowl eleven times.

The Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are a professional American football team that competes in the National Football League (NFL). The Rams franchise was founded in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams in the short-lived second American Football League (AFL) before joining the NFL the next year. In 1946, the franchise moved to Los Angeles. The Rams franchise remained in the metro area until 1994, when they moved to Anaheim. The Rams franchise returned to Los Angeles in 2016.

The club won three NFL championships, and is the only one to win championships representing three cities (Cleveland in 1945, Los Angeles in 1951, and St. Louis in 1999). The franchise has qualified for six Super Bowls, winning one (Super Bowl XIV), losing two (Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XXXVI), and tying one (Super Bowl XVIII). They have also appeared in two other Super Bowls that were later renamed as AFC–NFC Championship Games: Super Bowl XIII was played as such because they represented the NFC while the AFC team was unable to field a team due to injuries; and Super Bowl XLIV was originally going to be called an NFC–AFC Championship Game until it was renamed after New Orleans’ bid to host was approved on October 11, 2006.

The Rams appeared in Super Bowl LIII, where they lost 13–3 to the New England Patriots on February 3, 2019.

The New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are an American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.

The Patriots have appeared in the Super Bowl ten times in franchise history, the most of any team. They have played in three of the last five Super Bowls, and won two of them: Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LI. The Patriots’ dynasty began with their surprise appearance in Super Bowl XXXI when they defeated the heavily favored St. Louis Rams 20–17 following a sluggish start to their season.[1] Following Bill Belichick’s hiring as head coach in 2000 and quarterback Tom Brady’s selection as regular starter in 2001, New England won five of its next six Super Bowl appearances: Super Bowl XXXVI, XXXVIII, XLIX, LI, and LIII. With Brady serving as quarterback and Belichick as coach for all ten appearances, including each victory,[2][3][4] they are one of only two duos to appear together on ten occasions from a single NFL franchise; Dean Pees and Marvin Lewis accomplished this feat with Baltimore/Indianapolis from 2000 to 2009. Since Belichick’s arrival, New England has appeared in 14 AFC Championship Games—including nine consecutive seasons from 2001 to 2009—and seven Super Bowls; they have won eleven AFC East championships, eight AFC Championships during that span (tied with Pittsburgh for second-most all time behind Denver);[5][6] he is tied with Pittsburgh’s Chuck Noll for fewest playoff losses by a head coach (five). With their victory over Los Angeles Rams on February 3–2019—their sixth Lombardi Trophy overall—Belichick surpassed George Halas’ andCurly Lambeau’s record six NFL championships for the most by an NFL head coach.[7]
