What NFL Teams Fired Their Coaches?

The NFL season is over, and that means it’s time for some coaching changes. Here’s a look at the teams that have already fired their coaches.
NFL Teams that Fired Their Coaches
The NFL season is over and it’s time for some teams to make some changes. A few teams have already decided to fire their coaches. These teams are: the Cleveland Browns, the Green Bay Packers, the Indianapolis Colts, and the New York Jets.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals are an American football team based in Glendale, Arizona. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The Cardinals were founded as the Morgan Athletic Club in 1898, and are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States. The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium, which opened in 2006 and is located in the northwestern suburbs of Phoenix.
The team has won two NFL championships, both while it was based in Chicago. The first occurred in 1925, but is the subject of controversy due to the presence of an unofficial championship game that year. The second title came in 1947, three years prior to the formal creation of the newer NFL Championship Game; they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 14–3 on December 28, 1947 for that title. They have also won four conference championships and six division championships since 1970. However, since their last holding of either of those titles was in 2009–10 when they captured their only NFC West championship to date with a 10–6 record, they have mostly struggled during recent seasons, finishing below .500 every year since 2013 and only making one playoff appearance – a loss – during that time frame.
Green Bay Packers
On January 1, 2018, the Green Bay Packers fired head coach Mike McCarthy after thirteen seasons.
Indianapolis Colts
After a rough 2020 season, the Indianapolis Colts have decided to move on from head coach Frank Reich. Reich led the Colts to a playoff appearance in 2018, but the team has struggled the past two seasons and is coming off a 7-9 campaign. Owner Jim Irsay made the announcement on Twitter, saying that Reich “gave everything he had” to the team but that it was time for a “fresh start.” Reich finishes his tenure in Indianapolis with a record of 23-25.
New York Jets
The New York Jets have fired head coach Adam Gase after two seasons, the team announced on Monday.
Gase finished his Jets tenure with a record of 9-23, including 2-14 this past season. He was hired in 2019 to replace Todd Bowles, who was also fired after two seasons.
The Jets made the playoffs once during Gase’s two seasons, but that was in 2020 when they went 7-9 and lost in the first round to the Indianapolis Colts.
This offseason will be an important one for the Jets as they have the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft and are expected to hire a new head coach.
Reasons for Firing
After every season, NFL teams evaluate their coaching staff and decide who to keep and who to let go. This year, several teams have chosen to fire their coaches. In this article, we’ll take a look at the reasons why NFL teams might choose to fire their coaches.
Poor Performance
One of the primary reasons that NFL teams fire their head coaches is due to poor performance. A team may have high expectations entering a season and then fall short of those expectations, resulting in a coaching change. In other cases, a team may be rebuilding and not expected to contend for a playoff spot, but if they perform poorly even by those standards, a coaching change may still occur. Coaches may also be fired due to offenses that aren’t necessarily related to on-field performance, such as violating team rules or involving themselves in legal troubles.
Locker Room Issues
One of the most common reasons for firing an NFL coach is locker room issues. A coach who has lost the trust or respect of his players is in a very precarious position. Locker room issues can manifest themselves in a number of ways, from players openly questioning the coach’s decisions to players going to the media with their grievances. In either case, it’s a sign that the coach has lost control of his team and is not likely to regain it.
Personality Clashes
In some cases, it’s simply a matter of personal incompatibility between the coach and the team’s management. The most famous example in recent years was the case of Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers. It was widely reported that there was a power struggle between Harbaugh and 49ers GM Trent Baalke, and that led to Harbaugh’s ouster after the 2014 season.
Other times, it’s a question of personality clashes between the coach and the players. One example from this season is the case of Marc Trestman and the Chicago Bears. It was clear that Trestman had lost the locker room, as the Bears were one of the most undisciplined teams in the NFL. Trestman was fired after just two seasons in Chicago.
Coaches Who Were Not Fired
The NFL season is over, and that means it’s time for front offices to take a long, hard look at their coaching staffs. A lot of coaches will be relieved of their duties in the coming weeks, but there are a few who have managed to keep their jobs.
Bill Belichick
Bill Belichick is widely considered to be one of the best coaches in NFL history. He has led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, and his team has only missed the playoffs three times in his 18-year tenure. In spite of his success, Belichick has never been named Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, and he was actually fired by the Cleveland Browns after just five seasons.
Pete Carroll
Pete Carroll is the current head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, a position he has held since 2010. He is also the former head coach of the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and USC Trojans. Carroll has been widely praised for his innovative approach to the game of football, as well as his success in developing young players. He is one of only two coaches in NFL history to win a Super Bowl and a NCAA National Championship.
Sean Payton
Sean Payton is the current head coach of the New Orleans Saints. He has been with the team since 2006, and has led them to a Super Bowl victory in 2010. Payton has been one of the most successful coaches in the NFL, and has not been fired by the Saints.
