NFL Teams That Have Never Been In a Super Bowl
There are a few NFL teams that have never been in a Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars have never made it to the big game. This is surprising considering how competitive the NFL is. Let’s take a look at why these teams have never made it to the Super Bowl.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football team based in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Cardinals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The Cardinals were founded as the Morgan Athletic Club in 1898, and are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States. The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium, which opened in 2006 and is located in Glendale, Arizona.
The team was established in Chicago in 1898 and was a charter member of the NFL in 1920. Along with the Chicago Bears, the club is one of two NFL teams based in Illinois. The club then moved to St. Louis in 1960 and played in that city through 1987 (sometimes referred to as the “St. Louis Cardinals”). Before the 1988 season, the team moved west to Tempe, Arizona, a college suburb east of Phoenix, and played their home games for 28 seasons at Arizona Stadium on campus at Arizona State University. In 1996, Bruce Arians became head coach: he had previously been interim head coach for three games under Rex Ryan during Graham’s time as head coach following Buddy Ryan’s firing mid-season.[1]
Noteworthy players that have played for the organization include Hall of Famers Charles Bidwill Sr., Ollie Matson, Dan Dierdorf, Larry Wilson, Marshall Goldberg, J. V. Cain,[2] Jim Hart, Roger Wehrli,[3][4] and Kurt Warner;[5] Heisman Trophy winners Jay Berwanger (first recipient), Gary Beban,[6] Johnny Lattner,[7] Ernie Davis,[8] Ollie Matson;[9][10] Super Bowl Most Valuable Players Jim Hart (Super Bowl I), Jake Scott (Super Bowl VII); Outland Trophy winners Marshall Goldberg (1948), Bill Glassford (1950); and 9 first-round draft picks including Charley Trippi (#1 overall pick), Pat Summerall (#5 overall pick), Conrad Dobler (#12 overall pick), Ottis Anderson (#8 overall pick), Everson Walls (#24 overall pick).
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions have never been in a Super Bowl. They have been to four NFC Championship Games, most recently in 1992, but they have not been able to get over the hump. The Lions have a long history of futility, as they have only had two winning seasons in the last 20 years.
Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League as a member club of the American Football Conference South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium.
The Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team, becoming the league’s 32nd franchise and the first in Texas. The team’s majority owner is Bob McNair; minority owners include Joyce M. Mitchell, Roxanne Deschamps-Alberton, Lisa McNair, and Jack McInerney Jr. The team’s head coach is Bill O’Brien, and its general manager is Brian Gaine. The Texans have never appeared in a Super Bowl in their franchise history.
