What NFL Teams Have Never Won the Super Bowl?
Contents
It’s hard to believe but there are still four NFL teams who have never won a Super Bowl. Find out which ones they are.
The Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are a professional American football team based in the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The Bills compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays their home games at New Era Field in Orchard Park, New York. The Bills are the only NFL team that plays their home games in the state of New York. The Bills franchise was founded in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL), and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. They have advanced to ten AFC Championship Games, but have never reached the Super Bowl.
The Cincinnati Bengals
As of the 2019 season, eleven NFL teams have never won a Super Bowl. Of these, seven have never even made it to the big game. The Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Minnesota Vikings have all come up short. The Bengals have made it to two Super Bowls but lost both times.
The Cleveland Browns
The Browns have never won a Super Bowl, despite making it to the big game four times. They have the dubious distinction of being the only team to lose more than once in the Super Bowl, losing in 1974 and again in 1988. The Browns have also never won a conference championship, although they did win the NFL Championship in 1964.
The Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions have made it to the playoffs multiple times but have never won the Super Bowl. They have a long history of being one of the NFL’s most unsuccessful teams.
The Houston Texans
The Houston Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team. The Texans have never won a playoff game in their history. They have only made the playoffs four times (2011, 2012, 2015, 2016) and have never won a playoff game.
The Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars have never won a Super Bowl, but they did make it to the AFC Championship game in 1996 and 1999. They have a 0.0% chance of winning the Super Bowl this year.
The Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings have never won the Super Bowl. They have been to the big game four times but have never been able to seal the deal. The most recent appearance was in 1977 when they lost to the Oakland Raiders.
The Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles have never won the Super Bowl. They’ve been to the big game twice, but they’ve never won it.
The San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Chargers are a professional American football team based in San Diego, California. The Chargers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded on August 14, 1959, and began play on September 10, 1960, as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The Chargers joined the NFL as result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. Between 1995 and 2016, the Chargers were the only team to represent Los Angeles during that period.
The Chargers have won one AFL title (1963) and reached the AFL playoffs five times and the NFL playoffs ten times. In 1994, the Super Bowl XXXIX champion Chargers played their home games at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego before relocating to Los Angeles in 2017. The return of professional football to Los Angeles was hampered by COVID-19 restrictions that limited seating capacity at Dignity Health Sports Park to approximately 22 percent of its listed capacity of 70,240.
The Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks have never won the Super Bowl. They have been to the big game three times, but have never been able to come away with a win. The Seahawks do have one NFC Championship to their credit, which they won in 2013.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a professional American football franchise based in Tampa, Florida. The Buccaneers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. Along with the Seattle Seahawks, the team joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team. The Bucs played their first season in the American Football Conference (AFC) West division as part of an agreement between the two newly formed conferences.
The Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans, previously known as the Houston Oilers, are a professional American football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. The Titans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Previously known as the Houston Oilers, the team began play in 1960 in Houston, Texas. The Oilers won the first two AFL Championships, and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.
The team relocated from Houston to Tennessee in 1997, and played at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis for one season. The team then moved to Nashville in 1998 and played in Vanderbilt Stadium. For those two years, the team was known as the “Tennessee Oilers”, but changed its name to “Tennessee Titans” for the 1999 season. The team currently plays at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, which opened in 1999 as Adelphia Coliseum. The Titans’ training facility is at Saint Thomas Sports Park, a 31-acre site at 455 Great Circle Road not far from Downtown Nashville.
