What NFL Teams Have Never Won the Super Bowl?
Contents
With the NFL season kicking off this week, we thought it would be fun to take a look at which teams have never won the Super Bowl.
NFL Teams That Have Never Won the Super Bowl
There are currently eight NFL teams that have never won the Super Bowl. This includes the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans, and the Washington Redskins. All of these teams have been close at one point or another, but have ultimately fallen short.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football team based in Glendale, Arizona. The Cardinals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The Cardinal were founded as an amateur football team in 1898, and are the oldest existing professional football club in the United States. They played their home games at Tempe Normal Field, located on the campus of what was then Tempe Normal School (now Arizona State University) until 1959, when they moved to their current home field in Glendale.
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. The Lions compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. The team plays its home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit.
Despite their name, the Lions have never won a Super Bowl championship in their history. They are one of four current teams to have not won a Super Bowl, along with the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, and Houston Texans.
Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium.
The Texans have not won a Super Bowl in their franchise history. They have made four appearances in the AFC Championship game, all of which they lost. Their record in those games is 0-4.
NFL Teams That Have Won the Super Bowl
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. The NFL is the highest professional level of American football in the world. The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the NFL.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.
The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the AFL–NFL merger. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971.
The Patriots have appeared in ten Super Bowls since then, winning seven of them, most recently Super Bowl LIII in February 2019. They own the record for most Super Bowl appearances (ten) and wins (seven) by a head coach–quarterback tandem, as well as for most conference championships (17) won by a head coach–quarterback tandem. As of 2019, Bill Belichick is bothhead coach and general manager, while Tom Brady is still quarterback; both have been with New England for all seven of their Championships: 2001 II, XXXVIII, XXXIX; 2003 XXXVIII; 2004 XXXIX; 2014 XLIX; 2016 LI; and 2018 LIII . They are also one of only two teams to win five or more Super Bowls—and oneof four teams to win three or more consecutive—in NFL history….
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the Super Bowl six times, which is the most of any team in the NFL. They have appeared in eight Super Bowls, which is also the most of any team in the NFL. The Steelers have a long history of success, dating back to their founding in 1933. They are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history, and their six Super Bowl titles are a testament to that fact.
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. It is the third-oldest franchise in the NFL, dating back to 1919, and is the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team based in the United States. Home games have been played at Lambeau Field since 1957.
The Packers are the last of the “small town teams” which were common in the NFL during the league’s early days of 1926 and 1927. Founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun, the franchise traces its lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. Between 1919 and 1920, the Packers competed against other semi-pro clubs from around Wisconsin and Michigan, before joining the American Professional Football Association (APFA), now known as the NFL, in 1921. Although Green Bay is by far the smallest major league professional sports market in North America, its fandom is notorious for its passionate intensity despite its relative lack of success over much of the team’s history.
The Packers have won 13 league championships, more than any other team in NFL history, with nine pre–Super Bowl NFL titles and four Super Bowl victories. They won three consecutive championships twice (1929–1931 and 1965–1967), defeated the New York Giants in two straight NFC Championship Games (2007 and 2011), and recorded an NFC-best 16 victories during a regular season en route to their most recent title during the 2010 season. The Packers are also long-suffering fans’ favorites of decimated small market/ Rust Belt teams that have never quite managed to make it over that final hump; much like their Midwestern cousins Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions they have played second fiddle to more successful clubs from larger markets within their own conference for much of their history but have still managed to maintain a large and loyal fan base throughout even their darkest days.
Why These Teams Have Never Won the Super Bowl
There are a few reasons why NFL teams have never won the Super Bowl. One reason is that they have never had a good enough team. Another reason is that they have never had good enough coaching. Another reason is that they have never had good enough players. Another reason is that they have never had good enough luck.
Arizona Cardinals – Lack of a consistent quarterback
The Arizona Cardinals have never won a Super Bowl, and their lack of a consistent quarterback is one of the main reasons why. The Cardinals have had some good quarterbacks in their history, including Hall of Famer Kurt Warner and current quarterback Carson Palmer, but they’ve never had that one great quarterback who could lead them to a championship.
Another reason the Cardinals have never won the Super Bowl is because they’ve always been in a tough division. The NFC West has been one of the best divisions in football over the past few years, and the Cardinals have had to compete against teams like the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. It’s very difficult to win a division title, let alone make it to the Super Bowl, when you’re up against some of the best teams in the NFL.
The Cardinals are a good team, and they’ve come close to winning a Super Bowl on multiple occasions, but they just haven’t been able to get over the hump. Hopefully for their fans, they’ll be able to find that elusive championship soon.
Detroit Lions – Poor coaching
The Detroit Lions have not been to the playoffs since 2016, which is nothing new for the franchise. They have not won a playoff game since 1991. They have not won a division title since 1993. The shortest drought in any of those categories belongs to their head coaching position, where they have only had three coaches since 2000. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that those three coaches have a combined record of 111-189-1, which is good for a winning percentage of just .368. In other words, the Lions have not been able to find a coach who can consistently win games, let alone win a Super Bowl.
Houston Texans – Inexperience
The Houston Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team. The Texans have never won a Super Bowl, but they have made the playoffs six times in their history. They have never made it to the Super Bowl, however, and their lack of experience is likely one of the reasons why. The Texans have only been to one conference championship game, which they lost in 2017.
