What NFL Teams Need a QB in 2022?
Contents
2022 is shaping up to be one of the most interesting quarterback classes in NFL history. Here’s a look at what NFL teams need a QB in 2022.
The Current Quarterbacks
NFL teams are always looking for the next big thing at the quarterback position. In 2022, there will be a few teams that will be in the market for a new quarterback. Here are the teams that will need a new quarterback in 2022.
Tom Brady- New England Patriots
At 43, Tom Brady is the oldest player in the NFL, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. He’s coming off one of the best seasons of his career, in which he threw for 4,577 yards and 32 touchdowns with just eight interceptions. He also ran for another five touchdowns.
Brady has said he wants to play until he’s 45, and there’s no reason to doubt him. He’s in incredible shape and takes impeccable care of his body. He’s also still surrounded by a great supporting cast, including one of the best tight ends in the game in Rob Gronkowski.
The Patriots have some work to do this offseason to improve their offensive line and receiving corps, but as long as Brady is under center, they’ll always have a chance to compete for a Super Bowl.
Drew Brees- New Orleans Saints
Drew Brees may be on the downside of his career, but he’s still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. The Saints have a great team around him, and with a few more pieces, they could be a Super Bowl contender again. Brees is under contract through 2020, so the Saints will have to decide soon whether they want to keep him or let him go.
Eli Manning- New York Giants
Eli Manning is a former American football quarterback who played his entire 16-year career with the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He is the son of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and older brother of former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. He played college football at Ole Miss, and was drafted as the first overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers.
Manning was immediately traded to the Giants, where he became the team’s starting quarterback. During his first season, he led the Giants to an 11-5 record and helped them make a wild card berth into the playoffs. In his second season, he threw for a then-career best 3,238 yards and 24 touchdowns en route to leading his team to a 10-6 record and another playoff appearance. In Super Bowl XLII during his fourth year, he led his team to an upset victory over the undefeated New England Patriots, who were looking to complete a perfect 19-0 season—a victory that is considered among the biggest upsets in sports history. In recognition of his accomplishments in leading both teams back to prominence after long periods of struggles on offense before and after taking over their starting positions in each case (a combined four seasons), Manning was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player on two occasions—becoming one of seven quarterbacks ever to do so.
In 2009, he became one of only four quarterbacks (joining Warren Moon, Brett Favre and Ken Anderson) in NFL history to throw for over 4,000 yards in four consecutive seasons; that same year, he set an NFL record for most game-winning drives (12) in a single season. In 2010, Maning set then-career bests by completing 62 percent of his passes for 4277 yards with 29 touchdown passes against only 15 interceptions. In 2011 despite having what was statistically one of worst statistical years by a defending Super Bowl champion QB with 3144 yards 21 Touchdowns on 58% completion percentage along with 17 Interceptions en route to finishing below .500 at 9–7; Eli still managed leading 6 game winning drives while taking every single snap for Big Blue; which ultimately helped him win 2nd Super Bowl MVP honors vs New England Patriots again coming from behind this time down 9 points late in 3rd quarter.
The Up and Coming Quarterbacks
NFL teams are always looking for the next big thing when it comes to their quarterback. In 2022, there will be a few quarterbacks that will be eligible for the NFL draft. These quarterbacks have the potential to be the next big thing in the NFL.
Dak Prescott- Dallas Cowboys
Dak Prescott is an American football quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Mississippi State University from 2011 to 2015 and was drafted by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Prescott was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and earned Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2016. In 2017, he led the Cowboys to an 11-2 record as their starting quarterback and was named to the Pro Bowl.
Marcus Mariota- Tennessee Titans
In 2015, the Tennessee Titans drafted Marcus Mariota with the second-overall pick in the hopes that he would be their franchise quarterback for years to come. Mariota did not disappoint, leading the Titans to the playoffs in his second season and throwing for over 4,000 yards in his third. However, injuries have derailed Mariota’s past two seasons, and he has lost his starting job to Ryan Tannehill.
With Tannehill playing well and Mariota set to become a free agent in 2022, it is very likely that Mariota will not be back with the Titans next season. It is also possible that Mariota could retire if he is not able to find a starting job elsewhere.
Jameis Winston- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Jameis Winston was the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, and he immediately became the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Winston has thrown for over 4,000 yards in each of his first three seasons, and he has also rushed for over 500 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 2019, Winston threw for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns, but he also threw 30 interceptions. Winston has shown that he has the potential to be a great quarterback in this league, but he has yet to reach his full potential. The Buccaneers have made it clear that they are not interested in signing Winston to a long-term contract extension, so it is very likely that he will become a free agent after the 2021 season.
The Quarterbacks Who Need to Be Replaced
There are a few NFL teams who will need to replace their starting quarterback in 2022. The teams that will need to find a new QB are the New England Patriots, the New Orleans Saints, the Green Bay Packers, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Let’s take a look at each of these teams and their current situation.
Blake Bortles- Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars have been trying to replace Blake Bortles for years, and they finally seem to have found their guy in Gardner Minshew. Bortles was drafted third overall in 2014, and while he has had some moments of greatness, he has largely been a disappointment. He has thrown for over 4,000 yards just once in his career, and his TD-INT ratio is a disappointing 103-75. He is also turnover-prone, as evidenced by his career fumbles total of 24. The Jaguars have made it clear that they are moving on from Bortles, and it is time for him to find a new home.
Joe Flacco- Baltimore Ravens
Joe Flacco was once a Super Bowl MVP, but his play has deteriorated in recent years. He has been injury-prone and inconsistent, and the Ravens have decided to move on from him. They drafted Lamar Jackson in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and he will be their starting quarterback in 2019.
The other quarterback on the Ravens’ roster is Robert Griffin III, who is also a free agent after the 2019 season.
Ryan Tannehill- Miami Dolphins
Ryan Tannehill has been with the Miami Dolphins since 2012, and he has had an up-and-down career. He has shown flashes of greatness, but he has also been plagued by inconsistency and injuries. Tannehill is currently in the final year of his contract, and it is very unlikely that the Dolphins will bring him back. It is time for the Dolphins to find a new quarterback, and they should look to the 2022 NFL Draft to find their franchise quarterback.
