Eight teams from each of the two conferences qualify for the playoffs based on regular season points totals. seedings are used to set up a vigorous tournament bracket that attempts to minimize travel distance for playoff participants.

The first two rounds are played within the conference brackets while the Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Finals are played between conference winners. The Stanley Cup Playoffs are not held in Olympic years (since 1998) because many NHL players also participate in the Olympic ice hockey tournament, which occurs during the NHL’s regular season.

First Round
The first round of the playoffs, or Conference Quarterfinals, consists of four matchup series in each conference, with each series being a best-of-seven. Seedings are based on regular season records; therefore, division winners will occupy higher seeds than wild card qualifiers within their conferences no matter their regular season records. In each conference, the division winner with the best record will play against wild card team with lowest record while 10th place team plays seventh place team and 11th place team plays sixth place team. The remaining two matchups will be between 2nd and 3rd place teams from same division. These matchups are also arranged so that if there is a possibility for geographically close teams to play each other (such as Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks), they will not do so until at least Conference Finals, provided they do not have the same seed.

In the Western Conference, the Nashville Predators and Winnipeg Jets are facing off in what should be a thrilling series. Both teams made it to the Conference Finals last year, and they will be looking to take that next step this year.

The other Western Conference series features two teams that many expecting to meet in the Stanley Cup Finals, as the Vegas Golden Knights are taking on the San Jose Sharks. These two teams have been near-unbeatable all season long, so this should be a great series to watch.

Conference Finals

The Conference Finals are the third round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The two conference champions from the first two rounds will play each other in a best-of-seven series. The winner of each series will advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

Stanley Cup Final
