The NBA and FIBA
The NBA is the professional basketball league in North America while FIBA is the international governing body for basketball. The official size of an NBA basketball is 29.5 inches in circumference. A basketball that is used in the NBA must be inflated to a pressure of between 7.5 and 8.5 pounds per square inch and weigh between 20 and 22 ounces.
The NBA
The National Basketball Association ( NBA) is the pre-eminent men’s professional basketball league in North America, and is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world. It has 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada), and is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB),[3] which is recognized by FIBA (also known as the International Basketball Federation) as the national governing body for basketball in the United States. The NBA is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. NBA players are the world’s best paid athletes by average annual salary per player.[4]
The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA).[5] The league adopted the name National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949, after merging with its rival National Basketball League (NBL). The league’s several international as well as individual team offices are directed out of its head offices located in Midtown Manhattan, while its NBA Entertainment and NBA TV studios are directed out of offices located in Secaucus, New Jersey.
FIBA
The International Basketball Federation, more commonly known as FIBA, is the international governing body for basketball. They are responsible for organizing international competitions, such as the Olympic basketball tournaments and the FIBA World Cup.
The official size of a FIBA basketball is 29.5 inches in circumference, or about 75 centimeters. This is slightly larger than the official NBA size of 29 inches. The extra half-inch gives the ball a slightly different feel and bounce, which can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the style of play.
The Official Ball Sizes
The official ball size for the NBA is a size 7, 29.5-inches in circumference. The WNBA, however, uses a slightly smaller ball. It is a size 6, with a circumference of 28.5 inches. There is also a different ball for the Slam Dunk contest, which is a size 6 with a orange color and a flat bottomed so it can bounce higher.
The NBA
In the National Basketball Association (NBA), the basketball used is between 28.5 and 29.5 inches (72.4 and 74.9 cm) in circumference. It weighs between 20 and 22 ounces (0.57 and 0.62 kg). Men’s regulation games use a ball size 7, while women’s games use a ball size 6.
During an NBA game, each team is allowed seven substitutions. On average, NBA players run up and down the court for about 2 miles (3 km) during a 48-minute game!
FIBA
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is the organization that oversees international competitions, including the Olympics. The official size of a FIBA basketball is 29.5 inches in circumference and weighs 22 ounces.
The Unofficial Ball Sizes
The NBA uses an official basketball that is 29.5 inches in circumference. However, the unofficial ball size is a bit larger at 30 inches. This extra inch allows for more grip and control on the court. The downside to the unofficial ball size is that it can be harder to shoot and make baskets.

FIBA
The International Basketball Federation, more commonly known by its French initials FIBA (/ˈfiːbə/FEE-bə), from its original name French: Fédération internationale de basket-ball,[3] is an association of national organizations which governs the sport of basketball worldwide. Originally known as the International Basketball Federation, it was founded in 1932 in Geneva, Switzerland, by eight founding nations: Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland. Its current headquarters are located in Mies, Switzerland.
FIBA consists of five zones: Africa, AmeriCups (North America and the Caribbean), Asia, Europe and Oceania. There are also regional offices in every continent; they organize continental championships and regional competitions. The FIBA Basketball World Cup is a men’s tournament held every four years by FIBA. It was first held in 1950 with ten nations taking part and has grown since then to feature a qualification process that involves all of the continents represented by FIBA. The most recent tournament was co- hosted by Spain and the United States in 2014; it had previously been held in Turkey (2010), Japan (2006), Argentina (2002) and Australia (1998).
The next men’s tournament will be held in China in 2019.[4] A women’s tournament is also held every four years; it began as an invitational event for European clubs but now has over 150 national teams taking part. Its most recent tournament was co-hosted by Colombia and Spain in 2018; Australia also hosted the inaugural event in 1997.[5][6]
The official ball size for the FIBA World Championships is 29.5 inches (75 cm). In American stores, this size is sometimes referred to as Size 7.
