It’s that time of year again- time to find out who’s leading the NFL! We’ll take a look at the teams that are currently in the lead and what they’ve done to get there.
The NFL Teams
The National Football League is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. As of week eleven of the 2019 NFL season, the New England Patriots are in first place in the AFC East with a record of 9–1. The Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets are all tied for second place with a record of 5–5.
The New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.
The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the AFL–NFL merger. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971. The Patriots played their home games at Foxboro Stadium from 1971 to 2001, then moved to Gillette Stadium at the start of 2002 season. The Patriots’ rivalry with the New York Jets is considered one of the most bitter rivalries in the NFL.
The Patriots have appeared in ten Super Bowls since 1986, winning seven of them, most recently Super Bowl LIII in February 2019. They are tied with Pittsburgh for the most victories and have played in more conference championship games (14) than any other NFL team. As of 2020, they also hold an ongoing streak of 33 consecutive winning seasons (including 22 seasons with 10 or more wins). In September 2009, Forbes magazine ranked Kraft as tied for second-richest owner with $1.6 billion behind Jerry Jones, and ranked Belichick fourth among coaches at $7 million per year.
The Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference North division. It is the third-oldest franchise in the NFL, dating back to 1919, and is the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team based in the United States. Home games have been played at Lambeau Field since 1957.
The Packers are the last of the “small town teams” which were common in the NFL during the league’s early days of 1923 and 1920s. Founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun, the franchise traces its lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. Between 1919 and 1920, under Lambeau’s leadership and after a internal dispute between him and Calhoun, they became known as the Green Bay Packers. The team has had a total of 37 head coaches throughout its history; two of which – Gene Ronzani and Mike McCarthy – have won NFL Coach of the Yearcolor categories titles was first introduced by Hines Ward$.
The Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are a professional American football team based in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The Cowboys compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. They are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NFL, having played in eight Super Bowls and captured 22 divisional titles. The franchise has made it to the Super Bowl eight times, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos for second most Super Bowl appearances in NFL history behind only the New England Patriots’ eleven Super Bowl appearances.
The Leading Players
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. The NFL is the highest level of professional football in the United States. NFL players are the world’s best paid athletes by average annual salary per player. NFL teams are divided into two conferences, the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC), each of which has 16 teams. The current NFL champions are the Kansas City Chiefs, who defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
Tom Brady
Some believe that Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time. He has played in ten Super Bowls, winning seven of them. He has also won five MVP awards.
Aaron Rodgers
As of right now, there is a four-way tie for the lead in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Rams all having identical 8-1 records. But, if we had to pick one player who is leading the pack right now, it would have to be Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers has been nothing short of spectacular this season, completing 64.9 percent of his passes for 2,836 yards and 26 touchdowns with just two interceptions. He also has a 105.4 passer rating, which is the best in the NFL.
In terms of raw numbers, Rams quarterback Jared Goff is actually ahead of Rodgers with 3,134 passing yards and 24 touchdowns. But Goff has also thrown seven interceptions compared to Rodgers’ two.
The difference maker for Rodgers has been his efficiency and ability to take care of the football. He leads the NFL in touchdown percentage (8.3) and interception percentage (0.7) while also ranking second in yards per attempt (8.6). Simply put, Aaron Rodgers is playing at an MVP level right now and he’s leading the pack in what has been a highly competitive race for NFL supremacy this season.
Dak Prescott
Prescott has been the Cowboys’ starting quarterback since 2016. He played college football at Mississippi State University. In his rookie season, he set numerous Cowboys franchise records and was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team. He was also named NFL Rookie of the Year and was selected to play in the Pro Bowl. In 2017, Prescott led the Cowboys to an NFC East division championship and was again selected to the Pro Bowl. In 2018, he helped lead the team to a 10–6 record and ushered them back into the playoffs after a one-year absence.
The Fans
In 2015, the Seattle Seahawks came out on top as the leading NFL team. According to a study done by Emory University, the Seahawks had the most die-hard fans in the league. The study looked at a number of factors, including team performance, social media, and market size.
