What Teams Are In Baseball Playoffs?

The Major League Baseball playoffs are upon us. Here’s a look at the teams that made it in and what to expect from each one.

American League

The American League playoffs are set. The seeds are the Houston Astros, the Cleveland Indians, the Boston Red Sox, and the New York Yankees. The first round is the best-of-five division series. The Astros will play the Red Sox and the Indians will play the Yankees.

Cleveland Indians

As of October 1st, 2017, the Cleveland Indians are in first place in the American League Central division with a 91-71 record. They clinched their spot in the playoffs on September 27th, 2017. The Indians play in Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they have played in 13.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other is the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in 1901 as an expansion team under the name Baltimore Orioles. The team was renamed the New York Highlanders in 1913 and then the Yankees in 1913.

National League

Four teams from each league make the playoffs. The three division winners, plus the team with the best second-place record regardless of division, earn places in the playoffs. In the National League, those teams are the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chicago Cubs, the Washington Nationals and the New York Mets.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a professional baseball team in Los Angeles, California. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. Established in 1883, the team originated in Brooklyn, New York, where it was known by a number of nicknames before becoming the Brooklyn Dodgers after obtaining a minor league franchise in the 1880s. The team moved west at the end of the 1957 season and played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum until Dodger Stadium opened 62 years later in 1962.

Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals are a professional baseball team based in Washington, D.C. The Nationals compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East division. From 2005 to 2007, the team played in RFK Stadium; since 2008 their home ballpark has been Nationals Park, located on South Capitol Street near the Anacostia River in Southeast D.C.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The team plays its home games at Wrigley Field, located on the city’s North Side.
