The AFC was created on June 8, 1970, when the NFL merged with the American Football League (AFL). It consists of 16 teams organized into four divisions: North, South, East, and West.

Since the AFC East was established in 1970, all four of its teams have played in at least one Super Bowl, with three of them winning it (the Bills have appeared in two while the Jets and Patriots have each won three). The most recent Super Bowl appearance and win by an AFC East team was the Patriots in Super Bowl LIII.
