It’s October, which means it’s time for the Major League Baseball playoffs! Here’s a look at the teams that are competing this year.
American League
The American League Division Series are set and will feature the New York Yankees vs. the Minnesota Twins in one series and the Houston Astros vs. the Tampa Bay Rays in the other.
Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians are an American professional baseball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Indians compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. They have played their home games at Progressive Field since 1994. The team’s spring training facility is at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. Since their establishment as a major league franchise in 1901, the Indians have won two World Series championships: in 1920 and 1948, along with 10 Central Division titles and six American League pennants.
Houston Astros
The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000. The team’s championships include winning the 2005 NL pennant and 2017 World Series.
Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they have played in 13. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the Red Sox’ home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. The “Red Sox” name was chosen by the team owner, John I. Taylor, circa 1908, following previous adoptions of the nickname by other sports teams including the football club now known as Swansea City A.F.C., and had previously used red socks as part of their uniforms.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles team), moving to New York in 1903 and adopting the “Highlanders” name in 1913.

This team was established in 1884 and played its first season in 1888. The Dodgers are based in Los Angeles, California. They play their home games at Dodger Stadium, which opened in 1962. The Dodgers have played in the World Series 23 times, winning six shortstop Corey Seager won the National League Rookie of the Year Award, pitcher Clayton Kershaw won his third National League Cy Young Award, and first basemanAdrián González won his fifth Gold Glove Award.
Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals are a professional baseball team based in Washington, D.C. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East division. From 2005 to 2007, the team played in RFK Stadium; since 2008 their home ballpark has been Nationals Park, located on South Capitol Street in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Southeast D.C. The Nationals are the eighth major league franchise to be based in Washington, D.C., and the first since 1971. They were formed as an expansion team in 1969 as the Montreal Expos, and became the first MLB franchise located outside the United States.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, often shortened as the D-backs, are an American professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. The Diamondbacks compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. They have played every home game in franchise history at Chase Field, formerly known as Bank One Ballpark.
