What Teams Are In The Playoffs For Baseball?
Contents
As the baseball season comes to a close, it’s time to start thinking about the playoffs. Which teams are in the running for a spot in the World Series?
American League
The American League playoff race is getting interesting. The Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox are currently in the lead for the division. The Houston Astros and the New York Yankees are in the lead for the wild card spot. It is still anyone’s game at this point. Who will come out on top?
Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox are one of the most successful franchises in MLB history, having won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and appearing in 14. Their most recent World Series appearance and win was in 2018. In addition, they have won more than 115 years ago, in 1903. The team has played in Fenway Park since 1912, which is America’s oldest ballpark and is one of the most well-known sporting venues in the world. The Red Sox’s Spring Training home ballpark is JetBlue Park at Fenway South, located adjacent to Hammond Stadium on the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
The “Red Sox” name was chosen by team owner John I. Taylor after the red socks worn by players on Boston’s old National League team (which later became today’s Atlanta Braves). Sox had been previously adopted for the Chicago White Sox by newspapers needing a headline-friendly form of Stockings, as “Socks” was shortened to Sockers for newspaper headlines. The team name “Red Sox” is frequently shortened to “the Sox”, or even just “Sox”. There have been numerous spelling variations throughout the years; the most common ones today being “Sox” and “Saughts”.
Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians are a professional baseball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Indians compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. Since 1994, they have played at Progressive Field. The team’s spring training facility is at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. Since their establishment as a major league franchise in 1901, the Indians have won two World Series championships: in 1920 and 1948, along with 10 Central Division titles and six American League pennants.
Houston Astros
The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the New York City borough of the Bronx. The Yankees compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other club is the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. In baseball, the nickname “The Bronx Bombers” is used for the Yankees. Many of baseball’s best players have played for the Yankees, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford.
National League
The Playoff teams for the National League this year are the Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and the Milwaukee Brewers. These teams have all fought their way to the top of their division and are ready to take each other on in the postseason.
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. They play in the National League West division. The team is owned by Ken Kendrick and David Rubenstein, and their general manager is Mike Hazen. The Diamondbacks have won one World Series championship, in 2001, becoming the fastest expansion team in Major League Baseball history to do so (in only their fourth season of existence). They also became the first team in Major League history to win a World Series in their first postseason appearance.
Colorado Rockies
As of September 30th, 2019, the Colorado Rockies are in 1st place in the National League Wild Card race. The Rockies are currently 2.5 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the final playoff spot.
Los Angeles Dodgers
As of September 23, 2019, the Los Angeles Dodgers have clinched the National League West division title and are in first place. They are also leading the Major League Baseball (MLB) in wins. The Dodgers have a chance to clinch the best record in MLB and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The other teams in the playoffs include:
-Atlanta Braves
-Washington Nationals
-St. Louis Cardinals
– Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers are an American professional baseball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The Brewers scored the most runs of any team in 2018 and set a new franchise record for home runs with 253.
