Like most expansion teams, success did not come immediately for the Raptors and it was not until the 2000–01 season when they made their first playoff appearance becoming only the second Canadian club to do so. As all Canadian sports franchises, they struggled in their early years but after acquiring Vince Carter through a draft day trade in 1998 and signing Antonio Davis as a free agent in 1999, they improved dramatically making it to back-to-back Conference Finals appearances in 2000 and 2001.
