What Teams Are In The Playoffs Nfl?
Contents
The NFL playoffs are just around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about which teams are in the running. Here’s a look at the current standings and what teams are in the playoffs.
AFC teams
In the AFC, the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and New England Patriots have clinched playoff spots. The Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tennessee Titans are still vying for the remaining two spots.
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ravens compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The team plays its home games at M&T Bank Stadium and is headquartered in Owings Mills.
The Ravens were established in 1996, when Art Modell, who was then the owner of the Cleveland Browns, announced plans to relocate the franchise to Baltimore. As part of a settlement between Modell and the city of Cleveland, the Browns’ intellectual property—including team name, logos, training facility, and history—were kept in trust and the franchise was regarded by the NFL as suspended, with a new team to be established by 1999 either through expansion or relocation. The Ravens were licensed and began play in 1996. In their first season, led by head coach Ted Marchibroda, the team qualified for the AFC playoffs after compiling an 8–8 record during the regular season. The Ravens then defeated Peyton Manning and leaned on their backup quarterback Trent Dilfer en route to winning Super Bowl XXXV atraying their nicknames: “The Team of Destiny” or “The Cardiac Pack.”
Buffalo Bills
The Bills have not won a playoff game since 1995, but they have made the playoffs in two of the last three seasons. The Bills lost to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round in 2017, and then lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card round in 2018. The Bills have not won a division title since 1995, when they won the AFC East.
Houston Texans
-AFC South champs, clinched first-round bye
The Houston Texans are the AFC South champions and will have a first-round bye in the playoffs. They finished the regular season with an 11-5 record.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO. While Hunt’s ownership stakes passed collectively to his widow and children after his death in 2006, Clark represents the Chiefs at all league meetings and has ultimate authority over personnel decisions.
The Chiefs have won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969. They became the second AFL team (after Boston) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The team’s victory on January 11, 1970 remains the club’s last championship game victory and appearance to date, and occurred in front of a then-record Super Bowl crowd of 82,094 people at Miami Orange Bowl Stadium (the record stood until 103,985 people watched Super Bowl XIV at Rose Bowl Stadium ten years later). The Chiefs were also the second team, after the Green Bay Packers, to appear in more than one Super Bowl (and the first AFL team to do so) and the first to appear in multiple Super Bowls in a row. They have appeared in five AFC Championship Games since 1970 all but one since 1995)+ played their most recent title game during 2018 following their victory against Indianapolis Colts during a rain-soaked 2018 AFC Divisional Playoffs game at Arrowhead Stadium.. As of 2019 they rank tied with five other teams for second most appearances behind only New England Patriots with eight appearances total (one shared with Buffalo Bills who also have five conference championships).
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.
The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFC), the Patriots joined the NFL in the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971. The Pats played their home games at Foxboro Stadium from 1971 to 2001, then moved to Gillette Stadium at the start of 2002. The Patriots’ rivalry with the New York Jets is considered one of the most bitter rivalries in any sport.
The team has appeared in five Super Bowls in franchise history, winning all of them, most recently Super Bowl LIII in February 2019. This makes them one of only two teams to win five NFL Championships or more since 1970, along with the Pittsburgh Steelers; and one of only three teams to win four or more Super Bowls since 1970, along with those two other aforementioned teams as well as the San Francisco 49ers. With their victory on February 3, 2019, over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII, they also became one of only three teams to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice (previously accomplished by themselves previously during their 2004 and 2005 wins and by those same Steelers during their 1974 and 1975 wins), joining those same aforementioned Steelers and 49ers as well as becoming only the second AFC team ever to do so (the first being those 1974 and 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers).
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional American football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Steelers compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Founded in 1933, the Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC.
NFC teams
The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL). The NFC consists of 16 teams, eight of which are in the National Football Conference East division and eight of which are in the National Football Conference West division.
Dallas Cowboys
As of September 8th, the Dallas Cowboys are in 1st place in the NFC East with a record of 1-0. The Cowboys have made the playoffs 10 times in their history, most recently in 2018. They have won 5 NFC Championships and 3 Super Bowls.
Green Bay Packers
As of the 2019 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers are one of six teams in the NFC with a playoff berth, as they clinched the NFC North title. The Packers have made the playoffs every year since 2009 and have won four straight division titles.
Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams qualified for the playoffs by winning the NFC West division title for the first time since their return to Los Angeles in 2016. They will host the Dallas Cowboys in an NFC divisional playoff game at 4:35 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings are a professional American football team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings joined the National Football League (NFL) as an expansion team in 1960, and first took the field for the 1961 season. The team competes in the National Football Conference (NFC) North division.
New Orleans Saints
As the defending Super Bowl champions, the New Orleans Saints have already clinched a playoff berth. They can clinch the NFC South division title and a first-round playoff bye with a win over the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night or with a Tampa Bay Buccaneers loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football team located in the San Francisco Bay Area. They compete in the National Football League as a member of the league’s National Football Conference West division.
