Contents
It’s down to the last two teams in the NBA Finals! Who will be crowned the champion?
The teams
The Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors are the only two teams remaining in the NBA Finals. The Warriors are looking to win their third consecutive championship, while the Raptors are looking to win their first ever championship.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles. The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association.
The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA, having won 16 NBA championships, their last being in 2010. As of 2019, the Lakers have the second-most wins in NBA history, behind only the Boston Celtics.
Miami Heat
The Miami Heat are an American professional basketball team based in Miami. The Heat compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The Heat play their home games at American Airlines Arena, and have won three NBA championships.
Boston Celtics
In 2007, the Boston Celtics won their first NBA Championship in 22 years, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 4–2 in the NBA Finals. They then returned to the Finals in 2008 and defeated the Lakers again, this time in six games, to win their record-setting 17th NBA Championship overall. The Celtics then went on to defeat the Orlando Magic 4–2 in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics had home court advantage for the second consecutive year as a result of having the best record in the league. In Game 1 of the Finals, they took an early lead and never relinquished it en route to a 98–88 victory. With their second straight win in Game 2, they became only the eleventh team ever to take a 2–0 series lead on the road in NBA Finals history.[1][2] They then proceeded to lose Games 3 and 4 at home despite leading each game by 11 points at one point.[3][4] In Game 5, they held on to win 102–98.[5] After losing Game 6 103–94,[6] they bounced back with another road victory in Game 7 with a 97–91 final score, giving them their seventeenth championship title overall and sixth in Boston (all achieved between 1957 and 1987), cementing themselves as one of only four teams with more than 14 championships (the other teams being: Los Angeles Lakers with 16; San Francisco Warriors/Golden State Warriors with six; and Chicago Bulls with six).[7]
Denver Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets are an American professional basketball team based in Denver, Colorado. The Nuggets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The team was founded as the Denver Larks in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA), but changed its name to Rockets before playing its first game. It changed its name again to the Nuggets in 1974. After the name change, the Nuggets played for the final ABA Championship title in 1976, losing to the New York Nets.

The series
The Los Angeles Lakers are set to take on the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. This will be the first time these two teams have met in the Finals since 2010, when the Lakers won in seven games. The Lakers are coming off a tough seven-game series against the Denver Nuggets, while the Heat had a bit of an easier time dispatching the Boston Celtics in six games.
Game 1
The Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat will face off in the NBA Finals, beginning on Wednesday, September 30th. This will be a rematch of the 2020 NBA Finals, in which the Lakers defeated the Heat in six games.
In the 2020 NBA Finals, LeBron James was named Finals MVP after averaging 29.8 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 8.5 assists per game. Other key players for the Lakers included Anthony Davis, who averaged 25.9 points and 11.8 rebounds per game, and Rajon Rondo, who averaged 11.7 points and 10 assists per game.
For the Heat, Bam Adebayo emerged as a star during the 2020 playoffs, averaging 19 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game. Goran Dragic was also a key player for Miami last season, averaging 20 points per game during the playoffs.
It is unclear who will have the advantage heading into this series, as both teams are extremely talented and well-coached. However, one thing is certain: this series is sure to be an exciting one!
Game 2
The Miami Heat have evened the series at 1-1 after a dominant Game 2 performance. The Heat won 124-114 behind a balanced scoring effort led by Bam Adebayo’s 25 points and Goran Dragic’s 23. The Lakers couldn’t slow down the red-hot Heat, who shot 56% from the field and 52% from three. Jimmy Butler also added 22 points, 10 assists and five rebounds for Miami.
For the Lakers, LeBron James had 28 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, while Anthony Davis had 27 points and nine rebounds. Rajon Rondo continued to be a spark off the bench with 19 points and eight assists, but the Lakers’ reserves were outscored 54-34 overall.
Game 3 will be Friday night in Los Angeles.
Game 3
The 2020 NBA Finals is the championship series of the 2020 NBA playoffs. The NBA Finals will be played between the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers and the Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat. The series will be played in a best-of-seven format, with the first 2 games in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, followed by Games 3 and 4 in Miami. This will mark the 32nd time that the NBA Finals will be held in a 2–2–1–1–1 format (the current format), in which the first and second games are held at one team’s home court, followed by the next two games at the other team’s home court, and finally Games 5–7 – if necessary – at a neutral site.
The Lakers are making their 32nd NBA Finals appearance (second-most all-time behind Boston’s 34 appearances), while the Heat are making their 14th appearance (tied with San Antonio for sixth all-time). The two teams have met each other four times in the NBA Finals, with Miami winning in 2006, 2011, and 2020, and Los Angeles winning in 2009.
Game 4
Entering Game 4, the Celtics led the series 2-1. The Lakers had hopes of evening the series, but the Celtics had other plans. The game was dominated by the Celtics, who won 121-103. With the win, the Celtics took a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.
Game 5
The Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat are set to face off in Game 5 of the 2020 NBA Finals. The Lakers currently lead the series 3-1, and a win tonight would give them their 17th NBA championship in franchise history. The Heat, on the other hand, are looking to force a Game 6 and keep their season alive.
Both teams come into tonight’s game with plenty of motivation. For the Lakers, they have a chance to close out the series and win their first championship since 2010. Kobe Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, will also be in attendance for tonight’s game, which will no doubt be an emotional moment for the team.
The Heat, meanwhile, are playing for their season. A loss tonight would mean that they would head back to Los Angeles for a Game 6 that they would most likely lose. So, they’ll be giving it everything they’ve got in order to try and prolong the series.
We’ll see what happens tonight, but it should be a great game regardless of the result.
