What Teams Haven’t Won an NBA Championship?

The NBA Finals are upon us and it got us thinking – which teams have never won a championship?

Introduction

The NBA Finals is the annual championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western conference champions play a best-of-seven game series to determine the league champion. The winning team of the series receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.

Since 1947, when the NBA was founded, there have been 72 different teams that have played in at least one NBA Finals series. Of those 72 teams, only 13 have won an NBA championship. That means that 59 teams have never won an NBA championship.

In this article, we will take a look at those 59 teams and see if we can find any commonalities between them.

Teams that have never won an NBA Championship

The NBA is a professional basketball league in North America. The league was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). It changed its name to the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949 after merging with the National Basketball League (NBL). There are 30 teams in the NBA, 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada. Of those 30 teams, 8 have never won an NBA championship.

Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks are a professional basketball team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Hawks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The team plays its home games at State Farm Arena.

The team’s origins can be traced to the establishment of the Buffalo Bisons in 1946 in Buffalo, New York, a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). The Bisons were joined by the Gas House Gang and the Omaha Rockets as charter members of the NBL in 1948. When the Rockets moved to Philadelphia following that season, the NBL granted them an expansion franchise, which took on referred to as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. In 1951, Hawk owner Ben Kerner moved the team to Milwaukee; in 1955, Kerner moved the team again, this time to St. Louis.

Kerner sold the Hawks franchise to Thomas Cousins and Donald Roesinghaus in 1968; subsequently Cousins bought out Roesinghaus two years later. The Cousins group represented by future NBA commissioner David Stern purchased control of majority interest in 1977. In 1979 they hired Lenny Wilkens as head coach and general manager; Wilkens would lead them to their only NBA Finals appearance against his former Seattle SuperSonics squad (which won), and would win Coach of The Year for his efforts that season. He continued coaching until 1985 when former Boston Celtics star Kevin McHale took over as player-coach; under McHale’s leadership they posted consecutive 50-win seasons between 1987–88 and 1989–90 before reaching 54 victories during 1990–91, which was their first 60 win season since moving from Tri-Cities channeling their play through superstarDominique Wilkins who scored his 25000th career point early on during that season solidifying his status as one of best scorers ever at that time, but they were swept by Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals that Michael Jordan would take over leading thereafter throughout his illustrious career with one exception being when Isiah Thomas dethroned them en route to leadingthe Pistons “Bad Boys”to back-to-back championships while Jordan pursued a baseball career although he did return to lead them once again winning 3 more championships from 1996–98 after losing to Thomas and those Pistons again during 1995 playoffs prior).

The team is owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan, who acquired majority ownership in 2010. The Hornets play their home games at the Spectrum Center in Uptown Charlotte.

The original Hornets franchise was established in 1988 as an expansion team, owned by George Shinn. In 2002, Shinn’s franchise relocated to New Orleans and became the New Orleans Hornets. In 2004, the NBA established the Charlotte Bobcats, which was regarded as a new expansion team at the time. In 2013, the New Orleans franchise announced it would rebrand itself as the New Orleans Pelicans, ultimately returning the Hornets name, records, and official history (spanning from 1988 to 2002) to Charlotte. The Bobcats were officially renamed the Charlotte Hornets for the 2014–15 season.

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are a professional basketball team based in Chicago, Illinois. They play in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA), where they have won six NBA championships. The Bulls first dynasty stretched from 1991 to 1998, winning six titles in eight years with two three-peats. Led by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, the Bulls were noted for playing tough defense and winning important games in the playoffs. All six of their championship teams were led by head coach Phil Jackson.
The second incarnation of the Bulls dynasty ran from 2010 to 2014 and featured Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and Pau Gasol. Rose was named the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2010–11 season, becoming the youngest player to win that award at age 22.
In addition to their six championships, the Bulls have appeared in seven other NBA Finals series in which they failed to win a championship: 1975, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998.

Since 1994, the Cavs have played their home games at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland.

The team was founded as the Denver Larks in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA), but changed its name to Rockets before the first game. It changed its name again to the Nuggets in 1974. After the name change, the Nuggets played for the final ABA Championship title in 1976, losing to the New York Nets.

The franchise joined the NBA in 1976 after the ABA–NBA merger and features star players such as Carmelo Anthony and Nikola Jokić. However, despite making it to conference finals in 2009 and 2019, they have never won an NBA championship.

After six seasons in Vancouver, the Grizzlies moved to Memphis. The Vancouver Grizzlies were a Canadian professional basketball team based in Vancouver, British Columbia. They were part of the Midwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). They have featured such notable players as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Sidney Moncrief, Bob Lanier, Glenn Robinson, Ray Allen, Sam Cassell, Michael Redd, Terry Cummings, Vin Baker, Jon McGlocklin, Junior Bridgeman and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves are an American professional basketball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Timberwolves compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. Founded in 1989, the team is owned by Glen Taylor who also owns the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. The Timberwolves play their home games at Target Center, their home since 1990.

Like most expansion teams, the Timberwolves struggled in their early years, but after the acquisition of Kevin Garnett in the 1995 NBA draft, the team qualified for eight consecutive post-season berths from 1997 to 2004. Despite losing in the first round each year, Garnett transformed the Timberwolves into a perennial playoff contender.[6] After failing to make the playoffs in 2005 due to injuries to Garnett and Sam Cassell, they rebounded by qualifying for the 2006 playoffs with Cassell being traded midseason and garnett returning healthy for a strong playoff run which culminated with an appearance in the Western Conference Finals.[7] However, they failed to make it out of the first round for three straight years from 2008 to 2010 and again failed to make it past that round after Acquiring all-star power forward Jimmy Butler from Chicago in 2017.

The Timberwolves hold both the NBA record for worst season (17 wins in 2009–10) and worst start to a season (0–16 in 2014–15).

New Orleans Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans are a professional basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Pelicans compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays their home games at the Smoothie King Center.

The Pelicans were established as the New Orleans Hornets in the NBA’s playoff expansion by then-owner of the Charlotte Hornets, George Shinn, on April 18, 2002. Unlike most NBA expansion franchises that are formed through public auctions, the franchise was awarded to Shinn prior to the formal expansion draft process beginning. The team then officially adopted the Pelicans name on October 3, 2013 after purchasing naming rights from its longtime regional opponent, the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.

During their first season in 2002–03, led by All-Star point guard Baron Davis and second-year power forward/center Jamal Mashburn, the Hornets appeared make a push for a playoff berth by winning 19 of their last 31 games and finishing with a 31–51 record. However, despite this late season surge tripped up by injuries suffered by Davis and Mashburn, they still only managed to win five more games than their expansion brethren Minnesota Timberwolves and would ultimately miss out on qualifying for the playoffs.

In total, the Hornets/Pelicans have made the playoffs seven times – once as a division winner (in 2008), and six times as a wild card team (in 2004, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2018), but have never won an NBA Championship or Conference title.

The team plays its home games at Madison Square Garden, an arena they share with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Knicks were founded in 1946 as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which was later renamed the NBA. They won two BAA/NBA championships before joining the rival National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949. After four seasons in the NBL, the Knicks joined the NBA’s Eastern Division when it merged with the BAA. New York achieved little success early on, with six consecutive losing seasons from 1946–47 to 1951–52. Dick McGuire and further acquisitions such as Earl Monroe and Walt Frazier led an eventual revival that brought playoff berths four times between 1968 and 1973. However, they never managed to finish a season above .500 or make it past the second round of playoffs during this time period.

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder are an American professional basketball team based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Thunder compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The team plays its home games at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The Thunder were previously known as the Seattle SuperSonics, an expansion team that joined the NBA for the 1967–68 season. The SuperSonics moved to OKC in 2008 after a variety of ownership disputes and financial difficulties led to their relocation. In Seattle, the SuperSonics qualified for the NBA playoffs 22 times, won their division six times, advanced to three NBA Finals, and won the 1979 NBA Championship. In Oklahoma City, the Thunder have qualified for the playoffs nine times since relocating in 2008 and advanced to one NBA Finals in 2012 where they lost to Miami Heat 4-1.

Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers, commonly known as the Blazers, are an American professional basketball team based in Portland, Oregon. The Trail Blazers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The Kings compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Western Conference’s Pacific Division. The Kings are the only team in the major professional North American sports leagues located in Sacramento. The team plays its home games at the Golden 1 Center. Their best seasons to date in the city were in the early 2000s, including the 2001–02 season when they had their best record (61–21), and made it to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since moving to Sacramento.

The franchise began with the Rochester Seagrams (later Rochester Eber Seagrams and Rochester Pros) who were a successful semi-professional team based in Rochester, New York from 1919 to 1928. Jerry Reynolds began his NBA career as a player for the Cincinnati Royals, who later became the Kansas City-Omaha Kings and are now known as the Sacramento Kings. He later became head coach of his former team from 1986 to 1988. The Kings made three playoff appearances during this time period – losing twice to eventual conference champion Minneapolis Lakers and once to eventual NBA champion Philadelphia Warriors – but also won their first ever division title in 1949 under head coach Neil McCarthy.”

In 1957, after four seasons of finishing last place in their division, Group ownership purchased majority control of insurance company Downtown Stockton Enterprises and renamed themselves Topical Investments Corporation (TIC). After moving from Kansas City to Cincinnati following differences with Midwestern winters, they became known as Cincinnati Royals; eventually they would play under that name until 1971.”

The Jazz compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. Since 1991, the team has played its home games at Vivint Smart Home Arena. The franchise began play as an expansion team in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz. The Jazz moved to Salt Lake City in 1979.

The Utah Jazz were one of the least successful teams in NBA history, having never won a championship or Conference Finals series in their first 24 seasons recording only two playoff appearances between 1974 and 1988. It took them until 1984 to make their first playoffs, which was followed by another appearance in 1985 but then they went back into NBA purgatory for the next seven seasons missing the playoffs every year between 1986 and 1992.

Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards (formerly the Bullets and then the Wizards) are a professional basketball team based in Washington, D.C. The Wizards compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The team plays its home games at the Capital One Arena, in the Chinatown neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

The franchise was established in Chicago in 1961 as the Chicago Packers (not to be confused with the Green Bay Packers of the NFL). They were renamed to the Chicago Zephyrs the following season. In 1963, they moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and became the Baltimore Bullets, taking their name from a previous team of the same name. In 1973, the team changed its name to simply phenomenal Nick Foles’ Children’s hospital Bills during then-owner Abe Pollin’s ownership but it soon reverted back because fans disliked it so much; “Bullets” is a reference to old European coinage used before 1857 when lead bullets were introduced and banned because of too much lead poisoning which caused death rates to skyrocket during that time period.(Again not due old westerns movies where everyone shot everyone with no problem.) Wyatt Earp did not shoot people with lead bullets and neither should you.(Side note these are all true facts) They then became known as simply progressive insurance company Kevin Durant’s KD Boys Club or KD Boys for short lol until 1975 when they finally became known as what we now know them by today as; The Washington Bullets; named after another teams former name whom they took over their arena lease agreement from.(The US government would not allow them to use Bullets due to gun violence issues at that time so they used “Wizards” instead.)

You might be asking yourself why are they called “Washington” instead of “Baltimore”? Well that’s because they moved to Landover, Maryland in Prince George’s County right outside Washinton D.C. in 1971 but still kept playing under Baltimore until 1973 where they then played under “Washington”. Before moving back into D.C., They played at UMBC Event Center from 1987-1988 while construction for what is now known as Capital One Arena was still being worked on.(It was originally supposed to be called US Airways Arena but shortly after 9/11 happened; US Airways merge with American Airlines so it couldn’t use that name anymore and went back to being called simply MCI Center from 1997-2006 until finally becoming what it’s known as today in 2006.) Nowadays, It is not uncommon for NBA teams who play at an arena located within close proximity of another major city or landmarks other than their team name/mascot such as Milwaukee Bucks(who play right next door to Chicago), Brooklyn Nets(Play in New York City), Orlando Magic(Play near Disney World), Sacramento Kings(Play near Hollywood)to either use that city or landmark name instead on their jerseys or have jerseys that says both team names/locations on them.(i.e Milwaukee Bucks vs Nets where it’ll say BUCKS on one side and NETS with a small picture of Brooklyn Bridge on the other jersey.) As for Washington; since there isn’t really any landmarks located near by nor any other major cities relatively close by like Philadelphia being 4 hours away or Richmond being 2 hours away etc., They just went ahead and kept it simple by just putting WASHINGTON across all their jerseys.(Fun Fact: Their cheerleaders are also named “Washington Wizards” instead of “Bullets” like how most NBA teams have male&female dance squads going by separate names.)

Despite making 8 total playoff appearances; They’ve never made it past the second round nor have ever won an NBA Championship title nor a Eastern Conference title. Their best chance was probably during the late 1970s when they had future Hall Of Famers such Elvin Hayes & Wes Unseld leading them but lost in conference finals 3 times in 4 years from 1977-1980 getting swept each time unfortunately.(They also holds another dubious record of being swept a total 6 times throughout their existence including 5 times in conference/NBA Finals which is an NBA record.) On top of that; They also set another dubious record during that time span as well for having 10 straight seasons(from 1971-1981)of finishing last place or tied for last place in their division which is also an NBA record which has never been broken nor ever will most likely be broken due to divisional realignment & expansion throughout NBA history since then.; Even long-time Bullets/Wizards fans will tell you those were some tough & hard years growing up watching them lose almost every single game back then.; Some even jokingly call those teams back then ,”The Chris Paul Clippers Of Their Time”, due partly because 1.)They constantly finished at last place or tied for last place almost every year meaning they had high chances at landing early lottery picks almost every year similar how bad Clippers used be prior Chris Paul arrived which eventually led Clippers becoming one become one good teams we see today & 2.).most if not all great players such future HOF Elvin Hayes left via trades & free agency etc., shortly after those 10 years ended similar how most if not all talented players left Clippers during & after their disastrous 2012 Donald Sterling racially scandal era prior Chris Paul arrived turn things around for good IMO.; The only positive thing I could say about those 10 years was that; At least none of those teams ever won less than 30 games per season unlike some expansion teams we’ve seen throughout sports history that barely won any games whatsoever their inaugural seasons such Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets winning only 7 games during lockout shortened 1999 NBA season which is worst winning percentage record ever an NBA team has ever had any single season along wtih Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning only 2 games winning % wise NFL history prior joining NFC South division.; As bad losing records those 2 expansion teams had inaugural seasons; At least neither one wins less than 30 games per year like how bad previous 10 Washington Bullets teams did back 70s

Conclusion
