The four Grand Slam tennis tournaments
The four Grand Slam tennis tournaments are the most important annual tennis events. They are held in Melbourne, Paris, London, and New York. The tournaments are played on hard courts, grass courts, and clay courts.
The Australian Open
The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. It features men’s and women’s singles; men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles; junior’s championships; and wheelchair, legends’, and exhibition events. Prior to 1988 it was played on grass courts, but since then two types of hardcourt surfaces have been used at Melbourne Park – green Rebound Ace from 1988 to 2007 and blue Plexicushion from 2008 onwards.
The French Open
The French Open (officially named Tournoi de Roland-Garros) is a major tennis tournament held over two weeks between late May and early June in Paris, France, at the Stade Roland-Garros. The venue is named after the French aviator Roland Garros. It is the second of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments held each year, preceded by the Australian Open and followed by Wimbledon.
The main singles events are contested on red clay courts at the Stade Roland-Garros. Except in 1903 and 1904, when it was held at Racing Club de France’s grounds in continuation of an arrangement begun five years earlier with that club, the tournament has been held there since its beginning in 1891. In addition to the main singles competitions (men’s, women’s, junior’s, and legends’ under 55), doubles (men’s, women’s), mixed doubles and wheelchair tennis are also contested at Roland Garros.
Wimbledon
Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, is widely considered the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts. Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. The tournament is held over two weeks in late June and early July, culminating with the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Final (popularly known as The Championship).
The US Open
The United States Open Tennis Championships, commonly known as the US Open, is a major tennis tournament played annually at multiple locations in the United States. The tournament is the modern version of one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, the U.S. National Championship, for which men’s singles and men’s doubles were first played in 1881.
Held since 1978 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, New York City, the US Open is one of four annual Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the Australian Open. Since 1987, it has been chronologically the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year.
The other three Grand Slam events are played on different surfaces—Wimbledon on grass, Roland Garros on clay, and Australian Open on hard courts—but they have been played on all three surfaces during their histories; Wimbledon was first played on grass in 1877 but switched to lawn tennis in 1881; Roland Garros was first played on clay in 1928 but switched to Proposition tennis (a now-obsolete forerunner of hard court) from 1931 until it reverted to clay in 1933; and regular hard courts (notably Har-Tru courts) were used at Australian Opens from 1905 until 1988 (except for 1977), when they switched to Plexicushion Prestige.
The US Open is owned and organized by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), a non-profit organization whose principal purpose is to promote and develop American tennis.[9][10]Past champions include some of the greatest players who have ever played the game: From Pancho Gonzales and Arthur Ashe in men’s singles to Serena Williams and Chris Evert in women’s singles; from Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in men’s doubles to Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver in women’s doubles;[11][12]and from Donald Budge,[13]Maureen Connolly,[14]Rod Laver,[15]Billie Jean King,[16]and Chris Evert[17][18][19]in mixed doubles.

They include the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Masters, Madrid Open, Miami Open, Monte Carlo Masters, Rome Masters, Shanghai Masters, Paris Masters and the Indian Wells Masters. The ATP World Tour Finals is also considered a part of the Masters 1000. The ATP 500
The ATP 500 series is a group of tennis tournaments held around the world that are organized by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). The tournaments are indicated by their blueexempt status on the ATP Tour. The series includes 13 events, each with different draws of players.
The tournaments are important because they award more ranking points than most other tournaments besides Grand Slams and Masters 1000s. This gives players a chance to improve their year-end ranking and compete for big prizes.
Some of the notable ATP 500 tournaments include the Madrid Open, Queen’s Club Championships, and Hamburg International.
The ATP 250
The ATP 250 is a tennis tournament played on both the men’s and women’s professional tennis circuits. There are currently 33 tournaments that are part of the ATP 250 series, with 22 on the men’s tour and 11 on the women’s tour. The majority of these tournaments are played on hard courts, with four played on clay and three played on grass.

Davis Cup
Davis Cup is an international tennis tournament played between the member nations of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The tournament began in 1900 as a competition between the United States and Great Britain, and it has since expanded to include over 130 nations. The Davis Cup is contested on an annual basis, with matches taking place in a home-and-away format between February and November.
The Davis Cup is structured into a number of different rounds, with the top nations competing in the World Group. The World Group is contested over four weeks in September, with the eight nations that advance to the semi-finals playing each other in a knock-out format. The final two nations then compete in the Davis Cup final, which takes place over three days at a neutral venue.
The current holders of the Davis Cup are France, who beat Croatia in the 2018 final.
Fed Cup
The Fed Cup is the premier international team event in women’s tennis. The tournament is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is the world’s largest annual international team sport competition in terms of the number of nations competing.
The competition began in 1963 as a challenge between Australia and the United States. The event was called the Fed Cup because it was sponsored by the Federal International Lawn Tennis Association, now known as the International Tennis Federation. In 1990, the tournament expanded to include Europe, and in 1995 it became a truly global event with the addition of Asia/Pacific nations.
