The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League (AFL) in 1966, and the first Super Bowl was held at the end of that season; the merger was completed in 1970. Today, the NFL has the highest average attendance (67,591) of any professional sports league in the world and is the most popular sports league in the United States. In 1970, the NFL completed its merger with the American Football League (AFL), effective for the 1970 season. Under the merger agreement, the two leagues would hold a common draft and championship game (later called the Super Bowl). The AFL was originally conceived as a sort of minor league to the NFL, but rapidly evolved into a rival American football league.

After one year of play, these teams were assigned to either the Eastern or Western Conference based on their geographic location. TheBuffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins were placed in the Eastern Conference whilethe Cincinnati Bengals were placed in the Western Conference.

The Saints would not go away quietly, however. They scored 14 fourth-quarter points, including a touchdown with just over two minutes remaining, to cut the 49ers’ lead to 41-35. But the 49ers were able to hold on for the win, thanks in large part to a late interception by safety Dashon Goldson.
