A contest was held to name the new franchise, with over 11,000 entries and 1,700 different suggestions, including “honkytonks”, “barbeques”, “mudbugs”, and “grizzlies”. However, team management showed no interest whatsoever in any of these suggestions. General Manager Stu Jackson resolved this issue by coming up a list of potential nicknames that he presented to new owner Michael Heisley: “Express”, “Coalminers”, “Riversharks”,and two different names involving green: “Carpet Kings” and “Greens”. On April 27, 1995 Heisley chose the latter because it was short and had been tested favorably with focus groups; he then trademarked it on behalf of his team.
