The History of the Razorbacks
The Razorbacks began play in the 1884 season. They were originally known as the Arkansas Diamond Hogs. The team has won five national championships, 14 conference championships, and has made 41 postseason appearances.
The Early Years
The Early Years
The Razorbacks began play in 1873 as a club team called the Arkansaw Travelers. They were charter members of the Southwest Conference when it was founded in 1914. The Razorbacks have won 43 conference championships through the years, including 27 in baseball. Arkansas has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 41 times, making 20 College World Series appearances and finishing as national runner-up twice. The program has produced 59 Major League Baseball players, including 13 who have gone on to be All-Stars.
The Turn of the Century
The late 1800s and early 1900s were a time of great change for the University of Arkansas. In 1899, a new president, John Fletcher Hurley, was hired with the task of modernizing the university. One of his first acts was to change the school colors from gold and black to cardinal red and white. He also changed the name of the football team from the Cardinals to the Razorbacks. This name was chosen because it was already being used by the university’s baseball team. It was also believed that the name would be intimidating to opponents.
The Modern Era
Since the turn of the century, the Arkansas baseball program has experienced success on a consistent basis. Players like Jeff King, Clark Eagan, and Andrew Benintendi have led the Razorbacks to many SEC titles and NCAA tournament appearances. The Modern Era of Arkansas baseball began in 2000, when Dave Van Horn took over as head coach. Under Van Horn’s leadership, the Razorbacks have won five SEC tournament championships and made six trips to the College World Series. In 2018, the Razorbacks won their first ever National Championship, defeating Florida in the finals. The Modern Era of Arkansas baseball has been defined by success and excitement, and there is no reason to believe that this will not continue in the future.
