In 1898, the first official baseball game was played on campus. The following year, 1899, John Vaught took over as head coach and led Ole Miss to 16 winning seasons in his first 19 years. Under Vaught, Ole Miss won 6 SEC titles and 10 conference championships overall. He also led Ole Miss to its first College World Series appearance in 1972. In 24 years as head coach at Ole Miss, Vaught’s teams compiled a record of 554-183-7 (.750), won 10 SEC championships and made 12 NCAA tournament appearances.
