NBA news
The Utah Jazz will take on the Houston Rockets in the first game of the NBA’s return-to-play campaign on Thursday, July 30. The game will tip off at 6:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on TNT. This will be the first NBA game since March 11, when the league was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Trades
The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching, and there have already been some major trades. The most recent trade saw All-Star forward Blake Griffin get traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Detroit Pistons. Some other big names that have been traded include Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, and Derrick Rose.
Free agency
Free agency in the NBA usually refers to the period when players are able to sign new contracts with any team in the league. The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) restricts player movement throughout their careers, so free agency is one of the few times when a player can change teams.
The free agency period begins on July 1st, when teams are able to officially sign new players. However, negotiations can begin as early as June 30th. In recent years, many deals have been agreed to before July 1st and then officially announced on July 1st.
Players can become free agents in two ways: by being waived by their team or by completing their contract with a team. When a player is waived, they are released from their contract and become free to sign with any other team. Players who complete their contracts also become free agents, but they may choose to re-sign with their old team if they wish.
There are two types of free agents: restricted and unrestricted. Unrestricted free agents are free to sign with any team in the league, but restricted free agents can only sign offers from other teams that their current team has the option to match. If a restricted free agent signs an offer sheet from another team, their current team has seven days to match the offer and keep them on their roster.
Many players choose to become unrestricted free agents because it gives them more control over where they play and how much money they make. However, some players prefer the security of being a restricted free agent because it means that their current team is likely to match any offer they receive from another team.
