What are the rules of the NBA Dunk Contest?
The NBA Slam Dunk Contest is an annual competition held during the NBA All-Star Weekend. The contest was inaugurated by the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1976 and became part of the NBA in 1984. The winner of the contest receives the Slam Dunk Trophy.
Each year, four participants are selected to compete in two rounds of dunks. In the first round, each dunker has 90 seconds to complete two dunks. These can be either self-passes or passes from a teammate, and each dunk is worth two points. The total possible score for the first round is eight points.
The four dunker with the highest scores advance to the second round, where they have another minute and a half to complete two more dunks. These must be different from any of the dunks done in the first round, and each is worth three points. The total possible score for the second round is twelve points, giving each dunker a potential grand total of twenty points.
In case of a tie after both rounds have been completed, a single “dunk-off” round will be held to determine a winner. This works just like the regular rounds, except that each dunker only has 45 seconds for each dunk attempt.
The current format was implemented in 2014 and has remained unchanged since then. Prior to 2014, there were variations in both how many dunkers participated and how they were chosen. For example, from 2004-2010 there were only two participants per year who were selected by fan vote via text messaging.
