The Houston Astros are a professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.
The Astros were established as the Houston Colt .45s and began play in 1962 with All-Star catcher Earl Battey as their first manager. While named for then-owner Philip Anschutz’s short-lived “Firearms Company”, they switched to “Astros” for the 1965 season after Anschutz acquired full ownership of the team from Ford Frick who was acting as NL president on behalf of the late Judge Roy Hofheinz. The Astros played at the Astrodome, nicknamed “the Eighth Wonder of the World”, from its opening during the 1965 season until 1999 when they moved to Minute Maid Park.
