How to watch the NFL playoff games today?
The National Football League (NFL) playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs by virtue of their regular-season records.
The four divisional winners (the team with the best record in each division) seeded 1–4 based on their overall won-lost-tied record, and two wild card teams (the two remaining teams with the best records not already qualified within their conferences) seeded 5 and 6. The NFL does not use a fixed bracket playoff system, and there are no restrictions regarding teams from the same division matching up in any round. In the first round, dubbed the wild-card playoffs or wild-card weekend, the third-seeded division winner hosts the sixth seed wild card, and the fourth seed hosts the fifth. There are no restrictions during subsequent rounds. During the divisional playoffs, only Saturday games were played. Prior to 1975, only four teams qualified for the playoffs: two from each conference with each conference’s top two seeds receiving a bye week during Wild Card weekend.[citation needed]
The tournament culminates with the Super Bowl, the league’s championship game. Currently, 11 teams from each conference make the playoffs each year: four division winners (three division winners and a fourth “wild card” team in each conference), and two “wild card” qualifiers per conference who typically are seeded fifth and sixth in their conference standings but can so happen that they end up as higher seeds by having better records than other playoff qualifiers in their conference), for a total of 22 teams making it to postseason play out of 32 possible berths.
