What Was Before the NBA?
Contents
Do you know what was before the NBA? No, not the ABA. We’re talking about the National Basketball League, which was the first professional basketball league in the United States. Founded in 1898, the NBL was the forerunner of today’s NBA.
The Early Days of Professional Basketball
Professional basketball has been around for over a hundred years, but the National Basketball Association (NBA) is relatively new. The NBA was formed in 1946, but what was professional basketball like before then? In this article, we’ll take a look at the early days of professional basketball and how the NBA came to be.
The birth of the NBA
In 1946, the Basketball Association of America was founded, and three years later, the National Basketball Association was formed when the BAA and the National Basketball League merged. The first NBA game was played on November 1, 1946, between the New York Knicks and the Toronto Huskies at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. The Knicks won by a score of 68-66.
The ABA and the NBA merger
The early days of professional basketball were dominated by the American Basketball Association (ABA). Founded in 1967, the ABA was a challenger to the more established National Basketball Association (NBA). The ABA used a number of ideas to try to generate interest in its league, including the introduction of the three-point line and a wider court. The ABA also featured some star players, such as Julius Erving and George Gervin.
In 1976, after nine years of competition, the ABA and the NBA merged. Four ABA teams joined the NBA: the Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, New York Nets, and San Antonio Spurs. As part of the merger agreement, each team was required to pay a $3.2 million entry fee to join the NBA.
The NBA Before the NBA
The National Basketball Association was not always the behemoth that it is today. In fact, the NBA we know today is only a shadow of its former self. What was the NBA before the NBA?
The BAA and the NBL
The National Basketball Association, or NBA, is the world’s premier basketball league. Although it is only around 70 years old, it has already experienced a rich history full of great players, dynasties, and triumphant moments. But before the NBA became the household name it is today, there were two other professional basketball leagues that would lay the foundation for what we now know as the NBA. These two leagues were the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL).
The BAA was founded in 1946 with 11 teams. The league was made up of mostly small-market and Midwestern teams, with the exception of New York City who had two teams, the Knicks and the Dragons. George Mikan, who is widely considered one of the best players in basketball history, played for the Dragons. In its first year, the BAA’s games were not well attended and its existence was in jeopardy. But by signing some of college basketball’s biggest stars, such as Kentucky’s Alex Groza and Indiana’s Ralph Beard to professional contracts, as well as holding a draft that included future Hall-of-Famers like Chuck Cooper and Clyde Lovellette, the BAA was able to stay afloat and even thrive. The league increased its popularity by adopting rules that differed from college basketball, such as allowing players to jump while shooting (a practice that was banned in college at the time), which led to a more free-flowing style of play that was more entertaining for fans to watch.
In 1949, four teams from the NBL joined forces with six teams from the BAA to form what we now know as the NBA. Among these four NBL teams were dynasties like Mikan’s Minneapolis Lakers and Max Zaslofsky’s Chicago Stags. The Lakers would go on to win five championships in six years during this period (1949-1954), while Zaslofsky would lead his Stags to a regular season record of 49-11 in their only year in existence (1949-1950). Even though they only existed for one season, Zaslofsky’s Stags set an standard for excellence that would be matched by few teams throughout NBA history.

The NBA today
The NBA today is a global phenomenon, with games being televised in over 200 countries and an ever-growing fan base. But it wasn’t always this way. The NBA has its roots in humble beginnings, dating back to the early 20th century.
The National Basketball Association was founded in 1946, when a group of owners from the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America came together to form a new professional league. At the time, basketball was a relatively new sport, having only been invented in 1891. But it was quickly gaining popularity, thanks to its fast-paced and exciting gameplay.
The early years of the NBA were marked by struggle, as the league tried to find its footing. There were multiple rival leagues competing for players and fans, and several teams folded due to financial difficulties. But slowly, the NBA began to grow. By the 1960s, it had become one of the most popular sports leagues in the United States.
Today, the NBA is bigger than ever before. It boasts some of the most talented athletes in the world, and its games are followed avidly by millions of fans around the globe. What started out as a small regional league has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon.
