We’re taking a look at the biggest comebacks in NBA history! From the Boston Celtics erasing a 26-point deficit to the Los Angeles Lakers winning after being down by 19, these are the comebacks that will never be forgotten!
Boston Celtics
On May 13th, 1981, the Boston Celtics were down 3-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Philadelphia ers. One game away from elimination, the Celtics came back to win the next three games and take the series. This was the biggest comeback in NBA history at the time.
2008 NBA Finals
The 2008 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 2007–08 season, and was the conclusion of the season’s playoffs. The Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics defeated the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers 4 games to 2 in a best-of-seven series. This was Boston’s first title since 1986 and 17th overall. 2008 marked the first time since 2000 that the top seeds from both conferences met in the Finals. The Lakers had won nine straight NBA Finals appearances dating back to 2000, while the Celtics won two-straight NBA championships in 1984 and 1985 but failed to make the finals between 1986 and 2007.
The series was played under a 2-3-2 format (the team with home court advantage plays games 1, 2, 6, and 7 at home), which was used again in 2010. It also restoreduse of the original game schedule format which was last used during 1984 and 1985 when “home courts” alternated every other game through game 7 rather than alternating every game through game 5 like it is today. The change was made to reduce travel; however, there were frequent claims throughout 2008 that this created additional fatigue for players who had just completed a long playoff run leading up to the Finals.
2017 Eastern Conference Finals
In the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics made the biggest comeback in NBA history, coming back from a 26-point deficit to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Celtics were down by as many as 28 points in the game, but their defense held strong and they slowly began to chip away at the lead. They took their first lead of the game with just over a minute to go, and held on for the win.
It was an incredible comeback, and one that will be remembered for years to come.
Los Angeles Lakers
2010 NBA Finals
In the 2010 NBA Finals, the Lakers made one of the biggest comebacks in NBA history. They were down 3-2 in the series against the Boston Celtics, and they won two straight games to win the series. This was the Lakers’ 16th NBA Championship.
2020 Western Conference Finals
In the 2020 Western Conference Finals, the Los Angeles Lakers made the biggest comeback in NBA history, overcoming a 3-1 deficit to beat the Denver Nuggets in Game 7. This was the first time in NBA history that a team had come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series.
Golden State Warriors
It was an unlikely comeback. The Warriors were down 3-1 in the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors. They managed to win three straight games to take the title. This was the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history.
2016 NBA Finals
In 2016, the Golden State Warriors made history by becoming the first team in NBA Finals history to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the championship. The Warriors were down 3-1 to the Cleveland Cavaliers after losing Game 4 at home. They went on to win Games 5 and 6 on the road, setting up a winner-take-all Game 7 back in Oakland. The Warriors won that game handily, 115-101, to complete the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history.
2019 NBA Finals
After being down 3-1 in the best of seven series, the Golden State Warriors came back to win the next three games and take the NBA Championship. This was the first time in NBA history that a team had come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the championship.
