The History of Esports
Esports have been around for quite some time, with the first official esports tournament being held in 1972. The first esports game was a Space Invaders tournament, which was held in 1980. Since then, esports have grown in popularity and there are now many different games that are played at a professional level.
The first esports tournament
The first esports tournament was held in October 1972 at Stanford University for the game Spacewar. Twenty-four students competed for a total prize pool of $1,000. The event was powered by Atari and sponsored by Rolling Stone magazine.
The winner of the tournament was Bruce Baumgart, who took home the grand prize of $500. The second place finisher, Ted Dabney, went on to co-found Atari.
The rise of esports
The history of competitive video gaming, or esports, began shortly after the advent of video games with competitions held between players of “Spacewar”, one of the earliest arcade games. Esports has gradually developed since the early 1970s to become a billion-dollar industry and a significant part of the entertainment business. The earliest known esports competition took place on 19 October 1972 at Stanford University for the game Spacewar. Maurer’s team won the tournament and task force officer John Taylor presented Maurer with a trophy. Nearly two decades later, Nintendo hosted its first World Championships for Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 in North America in 1997. The rise in popularity of esports was mirrored by the growth of live venues and online platforms such as Major League Gaming (MLG), Twitch, and Gamebattles, as well as successful franchises such as Halo and Gears of War. In South Korea, professional Starcraft competitions were organized by private television networks such as Ongamenet (now OGN) and KDE TV (now SPOTV). The growth in popularity of esports in South Korea is often cited as one of the key driving factors behind the success and development of professional play elsewhere in the world.
