On September 3, 1958, the National Football League held its first regular-season game in more than two years. The contest pitted the defending Western Conference champion Baltimore Colts against the New York Giants in front of a sold-out crowd at Yankee Stadium. Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas threw for 208 yards and a touchdown in leading his team to a 23-17 victory.
The game was a rematch of the previous year’s NFL Championship Game, which Baltimore had also won in sudden death overtime. It was also the first time that two black quarterbacks (the Colts’ Interception units and the Eagles’ Earl Morrall) had started an NFL game.
